About Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies Scholarship Program

The University of London has established a prestigious scholarship for the MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies by distance learning.

These awards are named the Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarships to celebrate the achievements of the renowned refugee law expert Professor Guy S. Goodwin-Gill (pictured above), a close friend and supporter of the Refugee Law Initiative at the University’s School of Advanced Study since its inception.

Three Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarships will be awarded over the next three years, commencing in October 2015. These scholarships seek to support outstanding students who might not otherwise be able to gain access to the MA in Refugee Protection. As such, we particularly welcome applications from candidates who are nationals of and residing in low- and middle-income countries.

Applicants for the Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarship must:

• Have the offer of a place on the MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies by distance learning, and
• demonstrate outstanding academic merit or potential in the field of study, evidenced particularly by past achievements, and
• be unable to take up the offer of a place on the MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies due to financial circumstances.

Preferential consideration will be given to candidates who are nationals of and residing in low and middle income countries. Please see The World Bank website for a list of these countries.

Students currently studying for a University of London award are ineligible for this scholarship.

All applicants who receive a letter offering them a place on the MA in Refugee Protection will be invited to apply for the Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarship, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

The scholarship application is submitted via an online form that is separate to that for admission to the MA programme. It requires applicants to detail their past achievements as relevant to this field of study, professional positions held, personal information and financial situation. Applicants also provide a short statement of their motivation in applying to the programme and for the scholarship.

All applications will be reviewed against the award criteria using the University’s procedures and will be informed of the outcome of their applications in a timely manner. Regrettably, it will not be possible to provide further individual feedback on applications.

Key dates

The Guy S. Goodwin-Gill scholarship will be awarded yearly to a student intending to commence studies in the October intake of the MA programme. Applicants for the March intake must apply for the separate March scholarship. Relevant dates for the coming academic year are as follows:

Deadline for scholarship applications: 17 August 2015
Notification of outcome to all applicants: 31 August 2015
Deadline for registration on MA programme: 1 October 2015
MA programme commences: 12 October 2015

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications for admission to the MA programme are submitted sufficiently early such that an offer can be extended and their subsequent scholarship application entered prior to the 17 August 2015 deadline. Please note that, as a rule of thumb, it is unlikely that any admission application completed after 1 August 2015 will be processed in time.

Scope of the award

The Guy S. Goodwin-Gill scholarship covers the ‘whole fee’ for the two-year part-time distance learning MA programme, comprising two Core Module fees, four Elective Module fees, and the two Dissertation modules fees. This is equivalent to fees of £7,350 over the lifetime of the award.

The scholarship does not cover examination centre costs and any other costs not directly payable to the University (such as the purchase of additional materials or electronic equipment), resubmission fees, payment of further elective modules if the student decides to transfer, or any other fees not covered above. Applicants must ensure they can to cover such costs from other financial sources.

If no suitable candidates are identified in a single year, then the award may be held over until the following year.

Duties of successful scholarship recipients

Each scholarship recipient is required to write a short report at the end of each year of study outlining the impact of their study and research.

Each scholarship recipient is required to act at all times in conformity with the standards expected of students of the University of London. Where a student fails to comply with any of these terms, the University reserves the right unilaterally to withdraw his/her scholarship.

Background to the Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarship

Professor Guy S. Goodwin Gill has been a firm supporter of the Refugee Law Initiative since its inception, and his treatise The Refugee in International Law is a core textbook on the MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies. Professor Goodwin-Gill has written extensively on refugee protection as an academic at All Souls College, Oxford, and as a practitioner who served as Legal Adviser in the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 1976-1988.

The University of London created the scholarship on the occasion of Professor Goodwin-Gill’s retirement in 2015 to celebrate his lifelong contribution to international refugee law and to recognise his close connection with the Refugee Law Initiative. The scholarship promotes the study of refugee protection by outstanding students who are limited by financial circumstances, especially those from and living in low- or middle- income countries.
