“Armenian crafts of Syunik region” is a two-week summer school where the participants will learn about the unique traditions and history of the Syunik region and will gain practical skills by exploring the secrets of local crafts.

The Summer School is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in Armenian national and regional culture through discovering the diversity and secrets of traditional crafts.

During the summer school program, participants also will have the opportunity to explore architecture, monuments, unique culture and the historical landscape of the region.

The program is developed jointly by “Partnership and Teaching” NGO, “Women Development Resource Center” Foundation, “Dispro Line” LLC and ARMACAD Armenia.

The courses will be conducted by leading Armenian specialists in the history of crafts, as well as  local masters who are famous for their works and knowledge of secrets of national crafts.

Courses

The summer school program will include academic and practical classes on national crafts. Courses will be held at the studios of Syunik region, among which are the studio of  “Sisian ceramics”, “Brdic carpet’’ studio at Shinuhair, “Clogs making of Tatev” studio.

Each day the morning workshop will begin at the studio and will include theoretical lesson in certain craft, which will be followed by the practical part of the course․ The practical part will include the complete course of the preparation of the items and the explanation of all the necessary details by the craftsmen. In this part of the course, each student will participate in the process of preparing items, following the instructions of the craftsmen. Each school day is designed for 4 hours, which includes both theoretical and practical classes.

During the organized training breaks participants will taste traditional national dishes of the Syunik region.

There are experienced masters of different crafts in Syunik region. That is why trainings will be organized in the studios of those masters, which will also provide interesting and varied daily lives of participants and a great opportunity to get acquainted with the history and culture of the region.

The language of the summer school is Armenian, English translation will be provided.

Trips

During the summer school, especially on weekends, several trips will be organized.

Participants will visit Tatev Monastery, Khndzoresk, Halidzor, Old Goris, Bkheno-Noravank, Vorotnavank and Sisian, Karahunj, Shaki Waterfalls, Stepanakert, Shushi and Gandzasar.

Outcomes

  • The summer school will provide participants with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, opportunity for thematic discussions that will ensure a further use of knowledge gained during the summer school.

  • The summer school will help participants gain in-depth knowledge about Armenian folk crafts and their use in everyday life as part of the Armenian national culture.

  • The summer school participants will be able to use the skills, knowledge and the experience received during the trainings at academic research, individual business and start-up projects and/or as a hobby in their personal lives.

  • At the end of the summer school a festival of local national games and dance will be organized.

Who can apply

The international summer school is open to anyone at least 18 years old and interested in Armenian and regional culture and crafts.

The program is designed for historians, anthropologists, ethnographers, experts of culture or literature and anyone else who has interests in national crafts of Syunik region or just want to gain a deep knowledge of culture and national crafts of Armenia.

Costs

The Summer School participation fee is $1990 and it includes: Yerevan - Goris - Yerevan transportation, accommodation and food in Goris. All travel expenses during the program.

We will not cover visa costs, insurance, travel costs to Armenia, from Armenia, any costs of accompanying friends or family members.
