This course will explore various issues in environmental science, including air and water pollution, biodiversity, and global climate change, from various perspectives including scientific, economic, and political.
“Current Issues in Environmental Science” is a multi-focus, cross-disciplinary course that will explore various issues that are currently relevant to the environment in different regions of the world. These include air pollution, water pollution, global climate change, biodiversity, and others. Each issue will be examined first from a scientific perspective, and then from a human perspective. The human perspective will include economic, legal, political and cultural considerations. There will be a particular emphasis on the divergent circumstances of developed and developing nations. Course activities will include discussions, lectures, small group activities, and a simulation of the process of negotiating the Paris Agreement, an international treaty to reduce greenhouse gases.
After this course you will
- Have knowledge of the basic scientific principles behind various types of pollution and other environmental issues.
- Understand the political, legal and economic issues that prevent humanity from effectively addressing these issues.
