In 1988 Mr. Joseph Carrère Fox (Yale Class of 1938) established The Fox International Fellowship. This was to offer a non-violent highbrow exchange among Yale University and Moscow State University amid the tense global environment of the Cold War. It was named after Mr. Fox and his wife, Alison Barbour Fox. Mr. Fox, a philanthropist and previous international funding banker, believed that education and scholarly communication are empowered to host a more peaceful and prosperous world order. After the end of the Cold War and the easing of U.S./Soviet tensions, this system accelerated to different associate universities, facilitating a broader global conversation. Today the Fellowship has twenty trade partners worldwide and over five hundred alumni networks. 

What is the Fox International Fellowship? 

Yale and 20 world-renowned partner universities collaborate on the Fox International Fellowship, a graduate student exchange program. Fox International Fellows are chosen to become social impact leaders based on their potential. In the twenty-first century, the interdisciplinary and international nature of knowledge and practice increasingly influences such activity. Fellows' research projects and academic interests are centered on fields of study that can generate fresh, innovative ideas and open up new scholarly debate paths.

Since the fellows are provided with much academic support, they have short-term and long-term goals expected to obtain during their fellowships. Short-term goal: Each Fox Fellow is expected to contribute to the Fox exchange partner university's academic and social life. The long-term goal is to positively impact the globe and participate in national and international knowledge production networks.

Yale University established relationships with 21 world-renowned universities to encourage high-level graduate student interaction and further the goals of the Fox International Fellowship. 

Every year the program has at least one student from each Fox exchange universities partner who enrolls at Yale University. Also, at least one Yale student visits each partner. MacMillan Center Fox International Fellowships at the have research fellowships through exchanges with the following universities:

The Fox International Fellowship seeks to advance international intellectual interactions and partnerships among the next generation of leaders to improve mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries. To achieve this, the program aims to discover and foster individuals who are passionate about using scholarly knowledge to address the world's most serious problems. As a result, students studying social sciences and related fields in professional schools are especially welcome.

The fellowships will fund one academic year of independent research projects in a variety of subjects, including but not limited to:

  • International relations

  • Business and Finance,

  • Law

  • Global affairs,

  • Environmental policy,

  • Public health,

  • Political science,

  • Economics

  • Social sciences,

  • Contemporary history

Who is Eligible? 

To apply to Fox Fellowship, the applicant must be a graduate and professional school student at Yale University. If the applicant is in doctoral programs, they need to have completed their coursework. Students in Masters's or graduate professional programs should have administrative approval to interrupt their course work. Graduating master's and professional school students are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors with unusual distinction and focused research may also be considered. 

What do Fox International Fellows do?

Fox International Fellows is one of Fox Exchange Partner Universities, conducting independent research in one of the priority areas of the first semester. They have a graduate student studying and writing a dissertation, a master's degree graduate, a graduate who proposes to work on a current project, a graduate who continues a previous project, or a whole new means of research. Fox International Fellows will fully participate in Fox Fellowship's upcoming events and activities and become active members of the Fox Alumni Network. Throughout the year, the students are expected to report on their progress. The fellows are often asked to publish their research. Like Yale University, all Fox Exchange Partner Universities have excellent resources for researchers, and fellows are encouraged to make the most of the faculty, libraries, and archives they provide. 

Fellows frequently review classes or go to workshops and conferences at their college to get acquainted with the academic working in their field, to back them amid their residency or in their ongoing work. 

How to apply?

The application deadline is in February each year, and in mid-April, fellowship organizers notify accepted fellows. The Fellowship duration varies from 9 to 12 months. Usually, it begins in late August or at the exchange partner academic year.

Your application can be submitted online through the Student Grants and Fellowships Database at Yale University.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

A written research proposal which specifies the following (Max 1200 words):

  • Research Agenda: What is the research project about and its central ideas.

  • Methodological approach.

  • What led the applicant to decide on this research project? The applicant must explain the motivations (both personal and academic) that lead you to pursue this research.

  • What is new or surprising about the applicant's research?

  • Would the applicant's research impact the public policy debate? How? Describe.

  • Include the expected resources needed at the partner institution (e.g., specific libraries, archives, institutes, and or scholars) 

  • Include three faculty members you would like to work with

  • A narrative that addresses the applicant's leadership potential (include information on any leadership roles you have undertaken) (Max 450 words)

  • Attestation of sufficient language proficiency

  • Two letters of recommendation (Yale faculty member written)

  • Applicant's CV

  • Transcript of the applicant's grades (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)

General Application tips

Applicants must demonstrate the excellence of the relevant coursework and strong research skills in the areas proposed as a Fox Fellowship project. 

Doctoral students usually need to have completed their academic performance. Students in a master's or graduate professional program require regulatory approval to suspend coursework. Eligible applicants are graduate master's students and graduate students. 

Fox International Fellows is selected based on personality, intelligence, and proven leadership. Students must show their commitment to becoming a "citizen ambassador." 

Fox Fellowship candidates must demonstrate sufficient competence in the language skills of the country or region associated with the research project and be successful in the area and a large community of Fox Exchange partner universities. In English-speaking countries with a vital local or regional language infrastructure, candidates familiar with and interested in languages ​​related to research and broader cultural involvement may experience competitive preferences.
