GHI West Fellowship on the History of Forced Migration

The Pacific Regional Office of the GHI Washington (“GHI West”) and the Institute of European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley (IES) are pleased to announce a new Fellowship on the History of Forced Migration. The 18-months postdoctoral fellowship (July 1, 2019—December 31, 2020) is part of a joint initiative by the GHI Washington, IES, and the Zolberg Institute on Forced Migration in the 20th and 21st Centuries. The new initiative will increase collaboration between social scientists and historians working on topics related to forced migration with a particular focus on the environment.

The fellow will be based at GHI West, which is hosted by the Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley. As part of the initiative, the fellow will have the opportunity to pursue their research on the history of forced/environmental migration in collaboration with a social scientist based at the Zolberg Institute in New York City.

In addition to collaborating with the Zolberg Institute, the fellow will be expected to assist GHI West in the development of its research focus on the history of migrant knowledges. The fellow will participate in planning conferences, will help launch an online portal on migration and knowledge, and will contribute to strengthening GHI West as an emerging research center.

The successful applicant will receive funding for 18 months, i.e. a monthly stipend of $4600 and an allowance to help cover the cost of travel and health care. (The award of the fellowship is contingent on the availability of funds, which is pending.) Postdoctoral scholars in history or related fields are eligible to apply if they are based in North America or Europe and if they have completed their PhDs within the past five years.

To apply, please send:

  • an Application Form
  • cover letter
  • CV
  • copy of your PhD diploma
  • research project proposal (5 pages or 2,000 words max)
  • and the names and contact details of two referees

While applicants may write in either English or German, we recommend that they use the language in which they are most proficient. We accept electronic applications only. Please submit your documents in a single PDF file to fellowships@ghi-dc.org by February 15, 2019.

For more information, please contact Bryan Hart (hart@ghi-dc.org) or Andrea Westermann (westermann@ghi-dc.org).

About the GHI Washington’s Pacific Regional Office (“GHI West”)

GHI West began operation in 2017. The emerging research center establishes international and interdisciplinary scholarly networks and assists German researchers in taking advantage of the rich resources and opportunities in the western U.S. and Canada. While GHI West is active in all the core research fields supported by the GHI Washington, it also has a distinct area of research, namely the entanglements of the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. In addition, GHI West develops an international research network on the history of migrant knowledges. The focus is on the epistemic foundations, challenges, and transformations involved in migration processes. While our studies look at all actors affected by migration and ask how they know the world, understand societies, and conceptualize agency, particular attention will be given to migrants as political, economic, and cultural actors.
