Call for papers
Conference on the History and Culture of Salmast
6-7 September 2019
Yerevan, Armenia
The Department of Iranian Studies at Yerevan State University, The Narekatsi Chair in Armenian Studies at UCLA, and The Institute of Oriental Studies of the NAS of RA are organizing international conference entitled “Conference on the History and Culture of Salmast”.
The Conference will be held on September 6-7, 2019
Salmast is a region with rich history in architecture, music and literature. Many ancient and historic ruins of schools, theatres and churches can be found in Salmast. Cemeteries and tombstones, and a few churches and cathedrals that date back to 8th century are still standing in the region.
There have been little studies on Salmast and its rich history. Nevertheless, one can only hope that scholars will researches the Salmast region from every aspect so that its history will not be forgotten.
We enthusiastically invite scholars and graduate students investigating different aspects of the history and culture of the Salmast region to present the results of their recent research.
Work in progress is encouraged. Research papers are accepted on all related humanities and social-science disciplines, including, but not limited to:
- Linguistics
- Literature
- History
- Art history
- Architecture
- Sociology
- Anthropology
- Economics
- International relations
We encourage comparative themes and interdisciplinary approaches.
The official languages of the conference are English, Armenian, and Persian.

Deadline: 01 June 2019
Abstracts should provide a brief description of the work, clearly outlining the theoretical perspectives and methodology to be applied in the paper and specifying any audiovisual facilities required.
Participants will be given twenty minutes to present their papers. Conference proceedings may be published online after the conference.
The working languages of the conference are Armenian, English and Persian.
A post-conference reception is planned for the evening of September 6 to allow presenters an opportunity to exchange ideas with local scholars and students. The following day an excursion is being arranged for participants to visit sites where the Salmast heritage is still perpetuated.
The organizing committee expects to be able to offer three nights accommodation for conference participants from abroad. It is requested that participants make their own round-trip travel arrangements. Limited travel grants are available to assist those who might otherwise be unable to attend.
Armenian Visa:
For the citizens of Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova,Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan no visa is required. The citizens of the mentioned countries can enter Armenia without any invitation.
For the citizens of European and American countries, Australia and Iran as well no visa is required. No special invitation is required.
