PhD Fellowship Program 2019 - A simulator of the dynamics of America’s Cup Foiling Catamarans, University of Edinburgh, UK,

Publish Date: Jun 03, 2019

Deadline: Dec 31, 2019

A simulator of the dynamics of America’s Cup foiling catamarans

In 2013, for the first time the America's Cup was sailed with a class rule allowing foiling catamarans and wingsails. Only three competitors were able to successfully design and sail those catamarans due to the challenges in reaching a stable configuration. The project aims at developing a simulator to model the dynamics of the boat in six degrees of freedom to be used both during the design stage and in real-time conditions in order to set target trims and target boat speeds. The project will be performed with the partnership of world leading yacht designers and professional sailors, and will be potentially affiliated with an America Cup team.

Eligibility:

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree.
