In addition, candidates are also permitted to undertake teaching within the School up to a maximum of six hours per week during term time. This will be paid at grade 5 or 6 of the University's Doctoral Tutor salary scale. Proof of proficiency in English is also required, i.e., an IELTS certificate taken within the last two years showing at least 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each of the four sections.

These scholarships will be held in one of the School's three constituent departments. Application procedure

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship you must first be awarded a place on one of the PhD programmes. Details of the application process for PhD places are available on the official website but you can also address questions to bmec-pgr@sussex.ac.uk.

There is no separate application form for these Scholarships. Please note your interest in the scholarship in the finance section of the application form or if you already have an offer please notify us of your interest by emailing bmec-pgr@sussex.ac.uk.

An important first step is to check the departments, research profiles, faculty members and PhD programmes of the departments you are interested in, to ensure your research interests can be accommodated; details for this are provided below. As part of your application you should seek to identify a faculty member with research interests that match yours, and you should mention preferred supervisors in your application where possible.

Timetable

The deadline for applications is Friday 31 March 2017 for those applying for scholarships to be held in the Department of Business and Management or in the Department of Economics. For those applying for PhDs to be held in the Science Policy Research Unit, the deadline is Friday 12 May. We will aim to notify initially successful applicants within a month of the deadline.
