In an ever increasing complex world where news is freely available 24/7, the role of quality journalism is more and more unclear. This course focuses on journalism in general and news reports in particular. The course is divided into three main parts: Journalism in social (cross) cultural context, approaches to analyzing journalistic products and writing different journalistic genres. It is essential for everybody with an interest in analyzing and/or making news and journalistic products.

This course benefits general audiences interested in journalism, those who wish to continue their studies in the field of journalism studies and media discourse as well as those interested in choosing journalism as a profession.

Course aim
After this course you will be able to:
1. Sketch the history of journalism and the function of journalism; distinguish between different theories of journalism.
2. Relate semiotic choices to social and cognitive function of the journalistic product.
3. Distinguish between linguistic and visual choices of different journalistic genres.
4. Practice preparing first draft of your journalistic texts/images.
