Chatbots, robots, smart agents in virtual reality – social computers are popping up everywhere. With the commercialization of chatbots and virtual reality, our society is becoming more and more exposed to interacting with computers.
The aim of this course is to give an in-depth background about the history of interacting with computers, and the knowledge we have gained so far about what it has taught us about how humans communicate with machines.
Each day we will focus on one agent: What are its origins, what was it originally designed for, how do people interact with it, and what is it being used for today. We will, of course, start with the most important agent: Humans. How do we interact with computers? What does it do to us, how has it developed the way we look at interaction in general.
This course is part theoretical, where we discuss the history and different applications of human-computer interaction, part practical, where we delve into the how-to’s of each digital partner, and part philosophical, as we discuss the place of digital agents in science and society.
