M100 Young European Journalists Workshop 2020

The future of the European Union also hinges on the future of its democratic public sphere. Local journalism plays a vital role in this. For even as public communication increasingly transcends the national public spheres due to globalization, transnational problems such as climate change or migration and the growing importance of Facebook, YouTube and Netflix, local journalism remains a central cornerstone of democracies.

After all, it is at the level of local journalism that the global becomes specific, that people learn about the concrete impact of abstract developments, that the powerful become relatable – and accountable. However, the fact that local journalism has, in many democracies, been considered indispensable for decades, does not mean that we can take its future for granted. Today, the wide-ranging disruption of media and journalism has hit local journalism hard, causing massive economic pressures. Media diversity is shrinking, rendering reporting increasingly one-dimensional and under-funded.

  • How is Covid19 experience changing journalism?
  • How can we raise awareness for the value of journalism?
  • What business models are there for regional quality journalism?
  • What does it take for journalists to become relevant actors in the digital environment?
  • When and why is transnational, cross-border reporting needed?
  • What opportunities does collaborative journalism offer on a local and transnational level?

Against the background of these questions, this year’s M100YEJ workshop will focus on the role of local journalism in a global world and aim to produce concrete strategies for sustainable, innovative local journalism. Together, we strive to answer the question how independent local journalism can fulfill its functions for democracy and be profitable under changing technological and social conditions. Join us!

The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop

The M100 Young European Journalists Workshop is part of the renowned annual international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. The workshop addresses a young generation of journalists and editors between the ages of 21 and 30 from all around Europe, including the countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia. Potential participants work as journalists, bloggers or scholars. They should be passionate about their role in the democratic process and take an active interest in the future of media, journalism and democracy. Due to the covid-situation the workshop will be conducted as a decentral, online event over the course of six weeks.

The workshop modules consist of theoretical inputs, joint discussions as well as practical case studies and joint project work, where the newly-acquired knowledge can be applied, and which bear direct relevance to the participants’ professional needs. A central element of the workshop consists of an interdisciplinary scenario-process on the future of our European media landscape 2030. The results will be widely disseminated and presented at the international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium, one of the leading international forums for dialogue and debate on matters pertaining to media, international affairs and democracy. During the conference the young journalists will also be included in the online discussions with international thought leaders from media, politics, and academia to discuss the role and impact of the media in international affairs. The workshop will be held in English.
