The Scholarships will normally be awarded for one year and be tenable at Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarship may not be deferred.

History or background of award
Victoria University of Wellington is committed to Māori student recruitment, retention and achievement. Victoria also recognises the contribution that Wharekura schools make to te Reo Māori and Māori education.
Purpose of award
The purpose of this annual scholarship is to recruit academically able students from Wharekura schools to a Bachelor's degree programme at Victoria University.
Selection criteria
Any student who has completed or is completing their studies at a Wharekura and has applied to be, or is enrolled as, a full-time student in a degree level programme at Victoria University of Wellington, is eligible to apply. The awarding of the scholarship will be subject to confirmation of enrolment.
For the purposes of this scholarship a Wharekura is understood to be the secondary school component of a Kura Kaupapa Māori established under section 155 of the Education Act 1989 or a Designated Character School with a kaupapa Māori base established under section 156 of the Education Act 1989.
Additional information
By facilitating participation through scholarship support, the University acknowledges the value of the future academic achievements and contributions to the University and to the wider community that the scholarship recipient will make.
Decision makers
The Scholarships will be awarded by the Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the PVC Māori.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants must show strong academic potential. Financial need may be considered as a factor in the choice of a recipient, and applicants should include mention of such financial need as they feel appropriate.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Should the recipient withdraw or fail to achieve a satisfactory number of points during the year of tenure, the University reserves the right to request repayment of the scholarship. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards, except for the Victoria Excellence Scholarship, a Victoria Achievers Scholarship or a Victoria sports scholarship.
