One of today’s most fascinating fields of research and innovation involves applying quantum phenomena to the development of a new type in computing called quantum computing. Increasingly more and more research institutions and governments are engaging in the development of quantum computing, which makes this the right time to study various fundamental aspects, thereby preparing yourselves for the advent of quantum computers.
The purpose of this summer school is to encourage the next generation of researchers into quantum-based research. The aim of the school is to bring participants up to the cutting edge of research in some aspects of quantum information and computation, and to make it easier to get to that cutting edge in other aspects of the field.
The school will offer a coherent, unified, in-depth set of lectures and tutorials that covers the fundamentals of quantum computing. Our focus will be on obtaining a clear understanding of the fundamentals which will be supplemented by illustrative examples of quantum theory in action. No prior knowledge of quantum theory or quantum computing is assumed.
About the area: Quantum information and computation is one of the fields that benefits most from the creative interaction of mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and others.

We stress that no prior experience of quantum theory will be assumed. Instead, we will delight in introducing you to, amongst others:

  • The basics of quantum mechanics via fully-worked examples.
  • Fundamental protocols of quantum information science, such as, superdense coding, quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography.
  • The widely used model of quantum computation, the so-called quantum circuits model of computation. This is the model in which results such as Shor’s factoring algorithm.
  • Insights into the 'spooky' nature of quantum entanglement and explanation of why “entanglement is a physical resource”.
  • Properties of quantum communication channels and their application.
  • Finally, the adoption of quantum computing within the global financial sector where we show how research by the course lecturer currently helps major players in the banking industry in their adoption of quantum computing.
  • There will be an afternoon seminar session most days which will cover aspects of the lecture material. Questions, and happy and robust debates will be encouraged throughout the week.

After this course you are able to

  • Understand fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics;
  • Describe the workings of foundational quantum protocols, such as, superdense coding, quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography.
  • Understand the concept of entanglement and its importance as a physical resource;
  • Describe quantum communication channels and define concepts, such as, channel capacity.

The course is designed for
Quantum computing benefits most from the creative interaction of mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and others, such as, chemists. Students with a business / media background may also be interested in applying to learn about quantum computing because of the obvious impacts that quantum computing will make in the worlds of business, finance, and media. We stress that no prior experience of quantum theory will be assumed. Please don’t be concerned if you are not familiar with quantum mechanics. To get the most enjoyment from the one-week course, experience in elementary linear algebra would be great. We ask to all participants have maturity of a top performing second year undergraduate.

Admission Requirements
Background in linear algebra is ideal (an understanding of vectors and vector spaces).
