Summer School - Making [Systematic] Literature Reviews Work for You, 2022, Radboud University, Netherlands

Publish Date: May 22, 2022

Deadline: Jul 01, 2022

Event Dates: from Aug 08, 2022 12:00 to Aug 12, 2022 12:00

This course about protocol-driven literature reviews and narrative reviews is based on methods across all disciplines. It is necessary to know about these methods because the vast quantity of research findings published each year require clarifying sometimes conflicting conclusions, inform empirical research and, ultimately, influence practice and policy, when studies are amalgamated. Moreover, these types of literature reviews, particularly comprehensive narrative literature reviews and systematic reviews, have become more popular across all disciplines.
This course Making [Systematic] Literature Reviews Work for You will cover the basics of literature reviews (review questions, sourcing literature, databases, analysis, etc.) and demonstrates how findings of a (systematic) literature review are used for informing research methodologies and practice. To this purpose, the course contains sessions about methods, but also provides opportunities to work on your own literature review, individually and in groups. Methods cover quantitative and qualitative approaches, and mixed-methods reviews. A unique feature of this course is that sessions connect literature reviews to research philosophies and propositional logic. Also, examples of literature reviews will be presented to demonstrate the concepts and support you in developing your own design of the literature review.
An important aspect of [systematic] literature reviews is how they are reported and published; this includes doctoral theses, postgraduate dissertations, manuscripts for journal submissions, etc. During the course there will be discussion about how to write a literature review without losing your own voice, while also incorporating standard reporting practices in a meaningful way. Examples will be used to demonstrate writing and how writing can be supported using appropriate software. This includes trends in research data management such as the availability of generic and institutional repositories for reviews.
This interactive course aims at you and the other participants developing a design for (systematic) literature reviews.  In addition to the basics of literature reviews, there are sessions about specific methods, and at least one guest lecture.  Participants will work on their own method supported by the handouts and notes provided in addition to group work.  Furthermore, the course is based the book ‘Making Literature Reviews Work: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Systematic Approaches.’

After this course you are able to

  • Position your literature review in a methodological context for research.
  • Design your own method for a systematic or narrative literature review.
  • Analyse the results of a literature review, including implications for further research, informing practice and policy.
  • Report the outcomes of a literature and demonstrate awareness about relevant features for literature reviews for publication.

The course is designed for
Doctoral students, postgraduate students and early career researchers that are in any stage of their research. The interactive course offers the opportunity to design or to review the method that you have followed for writing a literature review.

Admission Requirements
Knowledge about research methods and research philosophies will be helpful, but is not a necessary condition to participate in this course.
