Are you looking or an experiential learning opportunity that combines theory with practice? The 2-week field-based summer school offers a unique opportunity to excavate a recently discovered site from the Medieval Anarchy period.
You will work to excavate the site, analyse your finds in our state-of-the-art labs, and learn more about the historical and geographic context of the archaeology.

Target group
This summer school is open to all undergraduate students but especially suits students studying anthropology, archaeology, history, sociology, museum studies or conservation. No previous field work experience is required.
Course aim
Over the course of the programme you will:
- Gain a solid grounding in anthropological and archaeological theory and practice;
- Spend at least 8 days on site, working directly to excavate and uncover finds;
- Undertake hands-on technical training, supported by academic workshops and on-site instruction;
- Develop your skills across of range of career-ready techniques including cutting-edge archaeological technology, archaeological survey, archaeological excavation, and recording techniques such as archaeological drawing methods, the use of record sheets and the documentation of finds;
- Learn how to assess the significance of an archaeological site within its heritage setting in general, and that of the medieval landscape of Somerset in particular;
- Undertake analysis in the Archaeological Science Laboratories at the University of Bristol’s main campus.
Key skills you will develop include:
- Practical skills and an understanding of the full excavation process, documentation process, and record keeping;
- The ability to describe and employ field skills used by archaeologists, and describe and explain the chronological relationships between various archaeological deposits;
- Produce evidence-driven analysis of the historic and geographical landscape;
- Organisational, teamwork and collaboration skills;
- Communication skills (written and oral);
- Reflective practice and the ability to connect material culture with written records.
Credits info: 5 EC
10 University of Bristol credits, normally suggested as equivalent to 5 ECTS or 2.5-3 US semester credits.
Fee info
GBP 2795: The programme fee includes:
- All tuition, excavation tools, and course materials;
- Single-room university residence accommodation, with breakfast and evening meals throughout the programme and packed lunches when on site;
- 24-7 support from the Global Summer Schools team, as well as University of Bristol student leaders, who are also available to help with your questions and lead activities;
- An exciting social programme, including weekend trips led by your faculty to nearby world heritage sites including Stonehenge and Bath;
- Transfers within Bristol from the airport, coach station or train station to residence on arrivals and departures day.
