Transplantation Medicine

10-14 June 2019

At the 2019 Transplantation Medicine Summer School, participants can expect to learn about the latest and greatest innovations in the field of transplantation medicine. This summer school will be filled with presentations by world-leading doctors in the field of transplantation from the University of Groningen itself, as well as from our partner schools located in South America as well as within Europe. Special transplant patients present at the summer school will also share their own experiences as a transplant donor, or recipient, to give us an even greater understanding of whats at stake in transplanation. In addition, a live donor-nephrectomy and kidney transplant operation will be displayed during the summer school, which is a great insight into what exactly goes on during transplantation. For the duration of summer school, we will get into the nitty gritty of transplantation medicine with focus on the current advancements, and new research that has been undertaken. Students will also gather together in small groups to complete transplantation-medicine related assignments that are based on the presentations and other miscallaneous events throughout the day to further consolidate their understanding of the matters at hand. Our summer school functions to stimulate students’ interest in research from an early stage and to give students the opportunity to discuss their research findings with others while also encouraging contact between themselves and transplantation medicine specialists at our summer school.

With all this being said, the 2019 Transplantation Medicine Summer School definitely won’t be all work and no play. We have organized a plethora of fun and interactive activities for our staff and students before, during and after the summer school! To begin our summer school, we will hold a cooking workshop where we will prepare dishes from all around the world together in groups. This bonding exercise is the perfect kick-off to the summer school, where everyone can get to know and learn about one another. Of course we will also have a great dinner after with all of the food we’ve made. Have you ever sailed before? We here in the Netherlands love to sail! In part due to the fact that there are so many bodies of water here, but also because it is such a fun activity that we’d love to share with you all. You will all have the opportunity to experience sailing and maybe even learn how to sail. Mix this in with some physical activity breaks between lectures, team games, and our infamous pub quiz, and the 2019 Transplantation Summer School will be something you will never forget!

Goals of the Medical Sciences Summer School Transplantation Medicine

  1. To introduce medically educated students to the various aspects of solid organ transplantation with focus on the limitations/complications we are facing today.
  2. Collaboratively find ways to understand/tackle these problems through clinical and scientific research.

Teaching Methods

The format of a Medical Sciences School is based on the intense interaction between students and the speakers.

A variety of lectures will be given by experts in the field of transplantation medicine. Furthermore, transplant recipients will contribute by giving lectures or interviews to illustrate the view of the patient. Also, examples of the challenges of organ transplantation will be collectively discussed, hence stressing the need for improvement of patient care as a whole. Additionally, participants will actively discuss and present scientific articles amongst each other in groups.
