Fudan-Princeton Postdoctoral Program (FPPP)

Fudan University and Princeton University have established a joint Postdoctoral Fellowship Program: Fudan-Princeton Postdoctoral Program (FPPP), aimed at training highly-qualified, early-career postdoctoral researchers in studies of Chinese economics and society problems using big data so that they are positioned to become leaders in their respective academic fields.  The Paul and Marcia Wythes Center on Contemporary China at Princeton University and Fudan University School of Data Science invite applications for two postdoctoral research associates in studies of contemporary China.

Each fellowship is expected to be awarded for up to two years: one year at Princeton University and one year at Fudan University. The position is to have the first 12 consecutive months at Fudan, and the next 12 consecutive months at Princeton University. The position may be renewed after the first year contingent on satisfactory performance. Preferred start date is September 1, 2019. The position is open to early-career scholars who would be in residence and participate in the host organization’s activities, including student-faculty seminars, workshops, and public lectures.  The position is primarily open to data science-relevant disciplines, but it can be open to any discipline, as long as the fellow conducts research on contemporary China and big data under the guidance of faculty at both Universities. The candidate’s research must be supervised by a faculty member at each University and, as such, must receive the endorsement of a faculty member at each institution in order to apply.

Funding:

For the stay at Fudan University School of Data Science:

During their stay at Fudan, Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a salary of no less than 200000 RMB/year and university housing at favorable pricing will be provided. The fellows will also be eligible to apply for travel funding from external sources.

Further, each fellow will be eligible to apply for travel funding, have access to resources at the Paul and Marcia Wythes Center on Contemporary China, and be eligible for employee benefits provided by Princeton.  During the appointment at Princeton, the postdoctoral researcher will hold visiting status at Fudan University School of Data Science.

Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria:

The fellowship is open to highly qualified researchers of all nationalities who received their Ph.D. no more than two years prior to the start of the appointment. The program is open to both internal and external candidates who are interested using big data technologies to study issues regarding contemporary Chinese economics and society.  Examples of appropriate research topics include, but are not limited to: measuring and understanding systemic risks of financial and economic systems;  developing financial technologies and their associated regulations; developing credit rating and modeling in macro finance;  optimizing energy distributions and usages; studying health costs and biological processes and measurements; developing more reliable measures of China’s national and regional economies; understanding economic mechanisms and consequences of China’s real estate boom; and developing an integrated framework for analyzing economic and financial risks in China. Applicants holding tenure or tenure-track faculty positions are not eligible to apply.

Selection is based on the academic excellence of the applicant, the quality of the proposed research project, compelling demonstration of the anticipated synergy of the appointed postdoc, and the commitment of the respective hosts at both universities.
