The Autumn School for Sustainable Entrepreneurship is a program for young change makers from African countries and Germany, organized by the ASA program within the framework of the African German Youth Initiative (AGYI). The format was launched successfully in 2016 in Berlin. This year’s event will take place in Dar es Salaam from 23 – 27 October and is organized in close partnership with Ashoka East Africa.

The Autumn School is driven by the vision of a transition towards a more sustainable economy. As a learning platform it enables the participants to extend their knowledge about different aspects of sustainable entrepreneurship, share their locally acquired best practices and creative approaches with each other, and become part of an international network of young people sharing the same spirit of sustainability.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship addresses social or ecological challenges through entrepreneurial efforts. Many of these challenges are of a highly complex and global nature. They require integrated responses, based on resources and know-how from different regional actors. By creating a common understanding of sustainable entrepreneurship in the global context the Autumn School wants to facilitate a dialogue and the implementation of sustainability projects across continents.

The Autumn School 2017 is aimed at up to 25 sustainable entrepreneurs addressing climate mitigation or adaptation issues who are interested in maximizing social impact. The format is particularly suited for entrepreneurs who are in the early implementation phase of their project.

Participants of the Autumn School will…

get to know more about the life and work of other young changemakers from African countries and Germany;
acquire useful tools to maximize their social impact;
exchange resources and experiences and prepare the ground for long-term virtual or regional exchange;
gain support and motivation to act as drivers of change for sustainable entrepreneurship in their own region;
be part of ASA’s extended alumni and partner network.

Autumn School 2017

For this year’s Autumn School we will select up to 25 young entrepreneurs with innovative initiatives focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation, with the aim of strengthening, showcasing and connecting young African and German changemakers in this area. This year’s format offers a unique combination of the ASA program’s expertise in the field of global learning and intercultural exchange on one hand and of Ashoka’s extended know-how regarding social entrepreneurship issues on the other.

Content of the Autumn School

Virtual preparatory phase where participants are supported by mentors to maximize their social impact;
Inspiring expert inputs and discussions on sustainable business and sustainability issues;
Peer-to-peer sessions where participants convene and learn from each other and from invited international guests;
Meetings with Strategic Partners where participants can critically discuss their business plans;
Field visits to selected projects in Dar es Salaam;
Networking event on sustainable business for participants and external guests featuring workshops, pitches, market place…
