Country Specific Scholarships terms and conditions 2017/8

The scholarship is available to international applicants on any undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD programme starting in September 2017.

Scholarship details

How many: 20 Scholarships are available, with a value of £5000 or £7,500 tuition fee waiver in year one only.

Application process:  Applicants starting the course in September must submit an online scholarship application via the student portal eVision by 11.59 pm (GMT) on 31 May 2017. Late applications will not be considered

Applicants starting in January will not be considered for a scholarship.

The application will includea 500 word essay describing why the applicant has applied to Brunel and why they would make a good ambassador for the course and University.

Eligibility

To be considered for the Country Specific Scholarships an applicant must: 

• Have been assessed by Brunel University London as an international student for fees purposes.
• Have an offer to study full-time on an undergraduate, postgraduate taught or a postgraduate research programme of study starting in September 2017 only.
• Must currently reside or have permanent residence in the country/region they are being considered for or be a      national of the country/region they are being considered for.
• Satisfy the entry criteria for admission to their chosen programme of study.
• This scholarship programme is not available to current registered Brunel students on a full time or part time ndergraduate or postgraduate programme. Students on the LBIC programmes and distance learning versions of courses, or the English@Brunel, Pre-sessional English and Intensive Foundation or Premasters courses through the IPLC (International Pathways and Language Centre).
• This scholarship is not available to those that have been in receipt of a Brunel International Scholarship previously, either as part of current or earlier studies or those that are awarded the Brunel International Scholarship in 2016/17.
• By accepting a scholarship you are agreeing to become a Student Ambassador for the University. As a student ambassador you would be expected to:

1. Attend a welcome reception during the year.
2. Take part in photoshoots and filming events organised by the International Recruitment or Marketing team (maximum of three).
3. Write a profile of yourself (250 words) that should include some or all of the following points – Why you chose Brunel – Your life at the university – How your course at Brunel will contribute to your career.
4. Become a student blogger. Create and develop a blog, which you will be expected to regularly contribute to during your time at Brunel (a minimum of 100 words a week). You will be given technical support to set up a blog and create graphics for your site, if needed. This blog will be featured on the international website, and sections may be used for other university publications. This route will suit anyone who is already a keen blogger. A maximum of three students may become student bloggers.
5. Give feedback and advice on how to apply for a Brunel international scholarship for future applicants, as required.
6. Meet guests from overseas universities or embassies.
7. Other duties as and when stated include hosting tours of the campus and its facilities, providing administrative support at Open Days, participating in social media and other marketing activity. 

This list is not exhaustive and may be subject to change.  Successful applicants will be contacted by the International Recruitment or Marketing team as and when required.

Allocation

• Scholarship awards are decided by the International Scholarship Panel and all decisions are final. The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Panel.
• Candidates will be considered based on their academic merit and personal statement.
• Scholarships are awarded for the September entry of the academic year 2017/18 and will not be deferred to later months or years of entry. Course applicants who intend to defer their studies must re-apply for a scholarship in the year they will begin their studies.
• All applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by the middle of July 2017 for applicants starting in September.

Conditions of Payment

• Scholarship awardees will be responsible for paying the remainder of their tuition fees after the scholarship contribution is deducted from the total fees.
• All awards will comprise a £5000 or £7,500 fee waiver from the cost of tuition fees for the academic year 2017/18. This discount is a single contribution and will not be continued in subsequent years and is not applicable to any      additional fees such as resubmission or module resit fees. No cash alternative will be offered.
• The scholarship does not replace the deposit of £3000. All scholarship winners will need to pay the £3000 deposit for their course in order to receive an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS). The      amount of your scholarship will be deducted from the remaining fees.
• The scholarships cannot be combined with any other University bursary, discount or awards, except the 2% prompt payment discount. This will be deducted from the tuition fees remaining after the scholarship discount has been applied at enrolment.
• Scholarship awards will not be credited towards tuition fees until the applicant has fully enrolled at Brunel University London, which includes having had their qualifications and other documentation verified and checked, and then completing the University enrolment procedures. This includes holding the correct visa to study.
• Scholarship awardees who have already paid the full course fees can visit the Student Centre to request a refund of any overpayment; once they have met all conditions of their offer and enrolled onto their main course in person.
• Successful applicants will not be eligible to apply for this scholarship programme in subsequent years (i.e. If you are successful in achieving a scholarship for an undergraduate course at Brunel in Year one, you will not be able to      apply for the scholarship again in Year two, nor will you be able to apply for the scheme again if you choose to do a postgraduate course at the University).
• Successful applicants will be required to engage with a wide range of publicity and promotional activities, plus a formal event during the academic year. Please note that this is a key requirement of the award and by accepting the award you will be entering into an agreement to undertake these activities. Failure to comply with this agreement may lead to withdrawal of the award.

Withdrawal of scholarship

• The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.
• The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who fails to comply with the requirement to take part in promotional activities, as stated in section three of these Terms and Conditions.
• A student who withdraws from their chosen programme of study prior to completion of Term 1 will not normally be      requested to repay scholarship payments made up to withdrawal; however, the University reserves the right to charge tuition fees for the period between the start of the course and the date of withdrawal. A student in receipt of a     scholarship who withdraws from their programme during their first year will not normally be requested to repay the scholarship. Any tuition fee liability remaining at the point of withdrawal is therefore calculated in accordance with the Student Financial Policy
• Should a PGT student receive a fee discount and subsequently withdraw from the course or go into abeyance, the tuition fee will be reduced in line with the Student Financial Policy). The fee discount will be applied to the reduced tuition fee.  
• A student electing to take a period of temporary withdrawal (abeyance) will only receive the scholarship once at the start of the course. If tuition fees remain due when returning from a period of temporary withdrawal then these would need to be paid upon return.
• Fee waivers are applied at the start of the academic year as part/all of a scholarship entitlement and will not      normally be amended once the fee waiver has been processed. Any tuition fee liability remaining after fee waivers are applied would therefore be calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy. In the case of withdrawal or abeyance the tuition fee and the fee waiver are calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy
