In this summer course you will work in interprofessional groups (e.g. medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy, speech-language therapy, social work). You will start from your own profession and knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of the problems of patients after a stroke. Afterwards, you will learn how to prepare and participate in interprofessional discussions and rounds. During the course you will enlarge your knowledge about stroke and other professions. For this we use the ICF-system (International classification of functioning, disability and health). Before the start of the Summer School there will be up to 60 hours of preparatory assignments.
Interprofessional collaboration is becoming increasingly important in the healthcare sector. Effective coordination and collaboration amongst practitioners is vital to the delivery of good care to patients with a complex pattern of symptoms. In the future more patients will suffer from chronic, and in many cases complex, illnesses. As a result, collaboration between professionals is more and more necessary.
This course creates a learning situation in which interprofessional collaboration can be practiced by students from different faculties and subjects, working together on the same cases – especially, the treatment of patients after stroke (cerebral vascular accident, CVA). The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the preparation and conduct of interprofessional rounds including producing a treatment or care plan. We use the ICF-model (International classification of functioning, disability and health, www.who.int) for this.
Next to these interprofessional rounds, students learn how to present their case. Students will be encouraged not just to look beyond the boundaries of their own profession, but even across national borders, as the course takes the form of a summer school open to international participants. During this summer school we follow the natural course of stroke, from the acute phase, rehabilitation phase till the chronic phase. A lot of professionals, who work daily with stroke patients, will share their experiences with the students in lectures and workshops. We will visit a hospital or rehab centre, talk to stroke survivors, and show a lot of different cases (mostly on video). Before the summer school starts, students need to do some preparatory assignments.
Target audience
Students in at least the second year of their study in the field of Cesar Therapy, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social work or Speech-Language Pathology.
Aim of the course
The central question of this course is: "what information do I need from other professionals for my treatment, and what information do other professionals need from me for their treatment?". The ability to prepare, conduct and evaluate multi-disciplinary rounds is a crucial competency in this course. It should result in 1) an interprofessional assessment or treatment plan; and 2) a coherent referral policy within the care chain.
Study load
The preparatory assignments will take up to 60 hours. During the summer school there are lectures and workshops in the morning. These are done in multi professional groups and are moderated by a tutor. In the afternoon the students do their preparation for the next day (without a tutor). The assignments can be done individually or by a group, either mono or interprofessionally.
