Traineeships at the ECML, 2022, Germany

The ECML has offered traineeships since 1997. The scheme has proved a highly successful means of developing further contacts between the Centre and its member states. Recruiting young professionals from all over Europe to join its team for a short period both reinforces the Centre’s role as a place of international cooperation and promotes an atmosphere of intercultural learning. For the trainees it often represents their first experience of an international organisation. The scheme which the ECML now offers is the result of a learning process and is adapted to meet the needs both of the Centre and the trainees themselves.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • be graduate or postgraduate students;
  • have very good knowledge of English or French which are the Council of Europe working languages, and, if possible, a basic knowledge of German;
  • be accurate and pay attention to detail, especially when dealing with figures;
  • be interested in accounting and administrative tasks;
  • be motivated and capable of working efficiently in a team and within the overall framework of the European Centre for Modern Languages.

MAIN TASKS INCLUDE:

  • assistance in the further development of a relational 'Projects' database (linked to the existing mailing database);
  • assistance in the implementation of Windream (Document Management Software), in particular development of a training guide ;
  • processing of financial documentation;
  • photocopying/scanning, classification according to budgetary article, registration of mailings, preparation of mailing to Strasbourg;
  • corrections to the ECML mailing database (correcting/inputting of already existing information;
  • entering of bank details into ECML database;
  • preparation of workshop documentation relating to prepaid tickets, hotel reservation forms;
  • preparation of reimbursement forms and assistance in registration of participants prior to workshops, network or expert meetings
  • Trainees will also be involved in the preparation and organisation of the events organised within the framework of the ECML's programme of activities.

BY THE END OF THEIR STAY, TRAINEES WILL HAVE GAINED:

  • an insight into administrative work of an international organisation;
  • experience in team work in an international, plurilingual and multicultural environment;
  • an opportunity to develop their language skills by ideally using three working languages (English, French and German);

WHERE IS THE CENTRE SITUATED?
The ECML is right in the centre of Graz. This gives you a wide choice of restaurants and bars to eat lunch or just to have a coffee during the break. 

HOW IS LIFE IN GRAZ?
Every day offers a wide range of events, from interesting talks and readings to life music, opera and theatre performances. Graz is connected - to all lines. Although the best way to discover the city is on foot or by bike, the well developed public transport network offers a great deal of flexibility.
If you are into sports, Graz’s parks and forests provide a unique space for running or hiking. Since the city is surrounded by mountains, there are many opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities such as skiing or climbing. Graz is definitely a city to be explored. DOES THE CENTRE ORGANISE ACCOMMODATION?
Although the centre does not provide accommodation for the trainees, it does have an agreement with a student residence in Graz where the majority of the trainees stay. The centre makes a reservation for 4 rooms during the whole year. To find out more see the information section of this website.

HOW MUCH DOES THE ACCOMMODATION COST?
A room at the student residence is currently 285€/month which leaves you with 435€ for transport, food and German classes if you wish to. There is a kitchen at the ECML so you can bring your food and eat here. Usually ECML trainees even manage to travel if they plan ahead to get good deals.

In order to apply for the traineeship, you should use the application form. Do not enclose any other document at this stage. (No CV, Euro-CV, etc) . We kindly ask you to describe your language skills in accordance to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
