The Machine Learning Summer School

The Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS) Series

The machine learning summer school (MLSS) series was started in 2002 with the motivation to promulgate modern methods of statistical machine learning and inference. It was motivated by the observation that while many students are keen to learn about machine learning, and an increasing number of researchers want to apply machine learning methods to their research problems, only few machine learning courses are taught at universities. Machine learning summer schools present topics which are at the core of modern Machine Learning, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art practice. The speakers are leading experts in their field who talk with enthusiasm about their subjects.

MLSS 2020 in Tübingen, Germany

In the summer of 2020, the MLSS will make its fifth appearance in the beautiful medieval university town of Tübingen, in southwestern Germany. It will be hosted by the Department of Empirical Inference at Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems between 28 June - 10 July 2020.

Target Audience

Everyone is welcome to apply to MLSS 2020. We aim to select 150 strongly motivated participants. Our primary target audience is early-mid stage PhD students with good technical background whose research topics are related to machine learning. Small numbers of industry practitioners, researchers, professors, exceptional master's students, and exceptional bachelor's students will also be considered, subject to space and availability. Industrial applicants can also obtain tickets via industry sponsorship.

All participants are expected to be familiar with programming in Python, be enthusiastic about machine learning, be familiar with linear algebra, basic calculus, and basic probability and statistics. To get a sense of the level of technicality of the lectures, check the recorded video lectures from MLSS 2017 here.

Travel Stipends

A limited number of stipends will be available to students in need of financial support, especially students from developing countries. The travel support will cover transportation costs (including air tickets) and in some cases accommodation. Please indicate on the application form if you would like to be considered for this, and enter the estimated amount of money for the transportation in euros. You should use the comments box to add additional details about your circumstances.
