T.J.A. Ballinger Scholarships

History or background of award
Mr T.J.A. Ballinger and Mrs E.B. Ballinger wish to establish undergraduate scholarships for students at Victoria University of Wellington.
Purpose of award
Preference will be given to students studying Science, Mathematics and/or Engineering.
Selection criteria
One scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of the following criteria:
• the scholarship will be awarded to a second-year student studying at Victoria University
• preference will be given to students studying
Science, Mathematics and/or Engineering
• the scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit although factors such as character, leadership, community involvement
and financial circumstances will also be taken into account
• the scholarship may be held by each student for up to three years providing an average A- (approximately a 7.0 grade point average) is maintained
• the general intention is that in any year a second-year student, a third-year student and a fourth-year student will hold a T.J.A. Ballinger Scholarship.
How do students apply?
Applicants must complete the application form, attach a one page personal statement outlining their future career plans and a one page referees statement.
Additional information
If in any one year income from the capital fund falls, the value of the Scholarships will be adjusted accordingly.
Decision makers
A short list of eligible candidates will be drawn up on the bases of their academic transcript and the quality of their one page personal statement.
The successful candidates will be chosen by the selection panel. The selection panel shall consist of a representative selected by the Scholarships Office (or their nominee) and a representative from the Science Faculty.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
The successful candidates will be notified in April of the year of application and are required to notify the Scholarships Office by 1 March if they require support for each subsequent year.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The Victoria University Foundation will ask recipients to write thank you letters on receiving the Scholarship and provide an end of year progress report for each year that the Scholarship is held, which will be forwarded to Mr Ballinger.
