EU-Russia studies at the University of Tartu

Now more than ever understanding the dynamic relations between Russia, the European Union, and its Eastern neighbours is fundamental to comprehend global developments in today’s changing world.

This unique, multidisciplinary, MA programme provides students with the analytical tools and skills to grasp the political, historical, and economic developments in Russia, the European Union, and their shared neighbourhood. Students are involved in a dynamic process of active learning in which the focus on global developments combines academic quality and the most innovative teaching techniques. Through continuous development, EURUS remains at the cutting-edge of studying EU-Russia affairs. Bridging academia and the “real world”, our programme emphasizes not only acquiring knowledge but also applying it.

Why study EU-Russia studies at the University of Tartu?

Established in 2008, our programme is one of the first international programmes taught in English at the University of Tartu. It combines a long-standing tradition of assured quality with a vocation to innovation and internationalization. The EURUS programme adopts innovative teaching techniques and emphasizes active learning via interactive teaching. Through one-on one-mentorship, we support the personal and academic development of each student. We highly value internationalization and aim to build a community of learners where a blend of cultures and traditions combines into a stimulating learning environment. In the 2017/18 academic year, we enrolled 20 students from 16 different countries ranging from the United States and Brazil to Finland, Russia and Hong Kong. With us, you can meet the whole world in Tartu!

Five reasons to join EURUS:

  • EURUS is a unique stepping-stone to explore Russia and its relationship with the EU and the former Soviet space from a privileged perspective:
  • in high quality and internationally-competitive programme, awarded in 2015 as the Best improver of study quality by the UT Vice Rector for Academic Affairs;
  • exposed to robust, internationally-recognized Russia and EU expertise & in contact with scholars and practitioners within the framework of a strong research-oriented Institute;
  • profiting from innumerable opportunities offered by our consolidated contacts with universities and institutions located in Russia, the EU, and the former Soviet space;
  • experiencing countless opportunities to become familiar with Russian culture and language;
  • located only 2-hours by bus from Russia and well connected with the main Western European capitals.

In academic scoreboards, UT ranks among the TOP 2% of universities in the world (THE World University Rankings 2016–2017) and international students have rated Estonia as the #1 place to stay (Erasmus Student Network Survey).

The UT offers advanced study facilities, excellent libraries, well-equipped computer labs and modern residence halls. Interactive and innovative teaching and learning methods are widely used. There is a wide variety of opportunities to study abroad, including Erasmus agreements with a broad range of European partner universities.

Studying in Tartu is both attractive and affordable – it means high-quality education at a low cost in a country that is simultaneously both ancient and very modern, close to nature and technologically advanced, proud of its unique culture and traditions and open to the world (Estonia is a member of the EU and NATO and it belongs to the eurozone and the Schengen space).

Career opportunities

Career opportunities include – but are not limited to - policy-making bodies, ministries and governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, international organizations (especially those dealing with Russia, the EU, and the ENP countries), international corporations, and think-tanks. Programme graduates are working in various international institutions and national governmental bodies, but also think tanks, in journalism and business. Many have also gone on to doctoral studies and work in academia.

We adopt a personalized approach to career development and individual career planning. Direct contacts with institutions, policy-makers, and third-sector and a well-established global network of alumni are ready to help you to connect to the world!

Tuition fee and scholarships

The tuition fee for fee-paying students is 3400 euros per year and it covers tuition and some study materials. Note that tuition fees can only be paid once the new semester officially begins.

Altogether 15 study places are available on the programme. On the basis of the admission results, 8 best applicants will be given tuition-waiver scholarships. Applicants do not have to apply for the tuition-waiver separately, as they will be considered automatically for the competition.

Teaching staff

Our team consists of a dynamic community of scholars with internationally acknowledged experience in research and teaching and combines various teaching cultures and educational backgrounds. In order to grant the most fruitful and rewarding teaching experience to our students, we integrate our in-house staff with highly reputed international visiting scholars from distinguished European, Eurasian, and North American universities. Our multi-national teaching team values an interactive and non-hierarchical approach with students. Our lecturers are approachable and positive-minded to support you throughout your learning experience!

In order to combine academic quality with "real world" application, we involve stakeholders and decision-makers with key national and international responsibilities, such as the former Vice President of the European Commission Siim Kallas, currently visiting a professor at our programme.
