Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

Credit-bearing Summer School

Programme Description

This course aims to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical tools to understand and meet the challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pose for governments devising public policies and delivery strategies to achieve them.

Since their formulation in 2015, the SDGs have entered the policy discourse of many developing countries, affecting policy-making and implementation processes. Rather than discussing the SDGs and their implications for development, this course will focus directly on the political and administrative capacities needed to pursue SDGs successfully. Issues that will be covered include strengthening of governance and stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, improvement of policy analysis and decision-making capabilities, advancement of public financial management systems and accountability, and the role that management control, monitoring and evaluation has in pursuing the SDGs.

The course will draw examples and case studies from various countries and different thematic areas including poverty, inequalities, sustainability, human capital, the environment, and peace and justice institutions.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Understand what SDGs are and how they matter for public policy and management
  • Explain how the pursue of SDGs affects the policy-making process
  • Explain how organisational and financial resources should be aligned to the pursue of SDGs
  • Explain how the attainment of SDGs can be measured, appraised and reported

SOAS Accredited

This course is worth 15 credits in the UK system. 15 credits is equivalent to 4 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system.

The students will learn the implications of SDGs onto the making and implementation of public policies. They will develop the capacity to critically argue about the role and impact of SDGs on public policy and management, and to devise approaches to pursue SDGs that take into account the conditions of specific countries.
