Newcastle University Research Excellence Academy PhD Studentships in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

£1 million in PhD studentships in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Each studentship includes the UK/EU rate of tuition feeand £14,057 living expenses per year (2016 - 17 Research Councils UK rate).

Start date and duration

Start date: 2016/17 academic year.
Duration: 3 years for Arts and Humanities disciplines and 3.5 years for Social Science disciplines, subject to satisfactory progress.

In the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, £3.9 million will be invested directly in supporting early career researchers and PhD students, enhancing our Arts and Humanities Research Council accredited Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership (in collaboration with Durham University and Queen's University Belfast) and Economic and Social Research Council accredited North-East Doctoral Training Centre (with Durham University), which are recognised as national centres of excellence in doctoral training.

Eligibility Criteria

The studentships are open to UK, EU and international applicants who propose to study for their PhD on a full-time basis.

Applicants must:
 - Hold at least a good upper-second class UK undergraduate degree and a Master’s level qualification, or their international equivalents
 - Be commencing their first year of a full-time PhD with the University in the 2016/17 academic year.

Current Newcastle University PhD students
- Students in their second year of study are eligible to apply if they were self-funded in their first year.
- Self-funded part-time students in their first or second year of study are eligible to apply if they change to full-time status.
