About the program

MA in Applied Economics is a tuition-based, one-year, three-semester-long intensive master´s program. We are here to develop curious, impact-driven individuals who will help build more prosperous societies. Our graduates can crunch the numbers. But they also experiment with human-centered design approaches to test ideas on real-world challenges.

Program details

The program is divided into three semesters, each 13 weeks long. You will study full-time for one full academic year. If you are interested in a part-time option, contact us at mae@cerge-ei.cz. Please note, however, that the Fall Semester is very difficult to do part time.

To graduate, you need to take the classes listed below with a cumulative GPA of at least 1.75, and pay all your tuition fees.

  • 5 core courses (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Integrated Quantitative Methods and Statistical Programming, Quantitative Methods 2, and Project Seminar). Please note that IQM is a double class.
  • 4 elective courses and Intervention Module or 6 elective courses without Intervention Module
  • 3 Communication for Impact courses
  • Pass/Fail: Discovery Week (1 week orientation)
  • Pass/Fail: Intensive mathematics review (1 week course)
  • Pass/Fail: Requirements for Personal and Professional Development (throughout the 3 semesters)

A semester is 13-weeks long, including one week for final exams. Most courses meet twice weekly for two 90-minute sessions. Courses often have an additional 90-minute exercise session. In the Fall semester, Micro/Macro and IQM are run in block of 6 weeks and meet twice as often. Intervention seminars meet for 3 weeks only and are followed by the Design class that meets for 10 weeks but its schedule is less regular (some weeks are more intensive than others). Project seminar has weekly critiques but significant portions of the class happen through consultations.

Taking three or more electives in a given area may give you a specialization, subject to course offer:

  • Financial Economics,
  • Public Policy,
  • Macroeconomics and Forecasting, or
  • Corporate Economics.

The MA in Applied Economics is a US-chartered degree. Masaryk University nostrifies our diplomas in the Czech Republic.
