Call for Applications 2019/2020

Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center Fellowship Program

The Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center  for German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History  at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem  will award doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowships  for the academic year 2019/20

2019-2020 Fellowship Theme:
Bildung & Therapy: German-Jewish Self-Formation

For the 2019-2020 academic year, the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center invites applications for doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships devoted to research on the theme of “Bildung and Therapy: German-Jewish Self-Formation.” Under this title we seek to encourage applicants studying conceptions of the self and of self-formation in the GermanJewish context, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including, but not limited to philosophy, literature, history, education, and cultural studies. Applications may engage with questions of pedagogy and self-formation; with the role of the emotions in the formation of the self; with formulations of moral perfectionism; with the centrality of the dialogical turn in German-Jewish accounts of self-formation; with German-Jewish literary depictions of Bildung; or with the politics of German-Jewish selfhood. Alternatively, scholars may address therapeutic aspects of self-formation, studying the significance of psychoanalysis within German-Jewish culture; the relationships between therapeutic forms of thinking and German-Jewish philosophies of dialogue; or the ways a wide array of intellectual, cultural, religious, and political activities have been taken up as therapeutic practices. What struggles must be undertaken (individual or social), what kinds of loss or confusion must be overcome in the formation of the self?
Successful applicants will be expected to carry out their research work at the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Center at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem from October 2019 through June 2020. During this period the fellows are expected to conduct their research in Israel and to contribute research on the year’s scholarly theme in the context of the seminar, workshops, and through publication in the Center’s journal.
Applicants must have fair knowledge of the German language, i.e. the ability to read texts in German and to follow lectures given in the German language.
Applicants interested in a postdoctoral fellowship must have been awarded their Ph.D. no earlier than October 01, 2015. Candidates can submit an application for a post doctoral fellowship as long as they submit their dissertation no later than June 1st, 2019.

Applications for a doctoral fellowship can only be accepted if the applicant has been a Ph.D. student for no more than five years.
Applicants may be of all nationalities. Israeli citizens applying for a doctoral fellowship must be registered at the Hebrew University as a Ph.D. student. Israeli citizens who are registered as Ph.D. students at a university abroad will be treated as international applicants.
Successful applicants will be granted a monthly stipend of 5,500 NIS. Furthermore, international applicants will be entitled to health insurance coverage. Fellows from abroad will also be allotted a round-trip flight (up to $800 or €600).

Applicants must submit:

• Application Form

• Research proposal ( 5 -3 pages)
• Curriculum Vitae
• One example of written work, max. 30 pages
