Ph.D. Scholarships
The GERMAN-CANADIAN STUDIES RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (PH.D.) is awarded on a biennial basis for the most promising doctoral dissertation project on any aspect in the field of German-Canadian Studies.
The GERMAN-CANADIAN HISTORY RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (PH.D.) is awarded on a biennial basis for the most promising doctoral dissertation project in German-Canadian history by a student enrolled in the University of Manitoba’s Doctoral Program in History, working under the supervision of the Chair in German-Canadian Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
The scholarships are awarded by the Spletzer Family Foundation Inc. to foster research of the highest quality at the doctoral level into the past and present experiences of German-speaking immigrants and their descendents in Canada, as well as into history and nature of relations and exchanges between Germany and Canada.
Eligibility:
1. Students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program at a Canadian university in such disciplines as (but not limited to) history, linguistics, literature, sociology, geography, political science, economics, or cultural anthropology, AND are writing a thesis (or equivalent) on a German-Canadian topic, AND are ABD by the time the awards are announced.
2. Students enrolled at a university outside of Canada who have completed their second degree or equivalent to the Master of Arts, are working towards a doctoral degree, AND are writing a doctoral dissertation on a German-Canadian topic, AND have all coursework and exams completed by the time the awards are announced. To qualify, students must plan to carry out substantial parts of their research in Canada and must be associated with a faculty member of a Canadian university for the duration of their stay.
3. Applicants for the GERMAN-CANADIAN HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP (Ph.D.) must be enrolled in the History doctoral program at the University of Manitoba and will be supervised by the Chair in German-Canadian Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
The Ph.D. scholarships are renewable once.
Selection will be made by an committee of university professors who will evaluate the merit of the proposal and its potential to broaden our knowledge of the German-Canadian experience or German-Canadian relations, the candidate’s research background in related areas, the likelihood that the project can be completed within the proposed budget, and the candidate’s willingness to share results with the community in public lectures and in other forms.
Should no scholarship be awarded because of lack of submissions or absence of eligible or qualified proposals, the grant will be re-advertised in the following year.
M.A. Scholarships
The GERMAN-CANADIAN STUDIES RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (M.A.) is awarded on an annual basis for the most promising Master’s thesis project on any aspect in the field of German-Canadian Studies.
The GERMAN-CANADIAN HISTORY RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (M.A.) is awarded on an annual basis for the most promising Master’s thesis project in German-Canadian history by a student enrolled in the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba’s Joint Master's Program in History, working under the supervision of the Chair in German-Canadian Studies at the University of Winnipeg.

To qualify, students must plan to carry out substantial parts of their research in Canada and must be associated with a faculty member of a Canadian university for the duration of their stay.
3. Applicants for the GERMAN-CANADIAN HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP (M.A.) must be enrolled in the University of Winnipeg/University of Manitoba Joint Masters Program in History and will be supervised by the Chair in German-Canadian Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
Selection will be made by an interdisciplinary committee of university professors who will evaluate the merit of the proposal and its potential to broaden our knowledge of the German-Canadian experience or German-Canadian relations, the candidate’s research background in related areas, the likelihood that the project can be completed within the proposed budget, and the candidate’s willingness to share his/her findings with the community in public lectures and in other forms.
