Master of European Studies (M.E.S.) Call for Applications for the Academic Session 2018-2019

The postgraduate Master of European Studies is a one-year full time/two-year part time MA programme that equips a class of approximately 25 students with an in depth, interdisciplinary knowledge about the European Union. In a unique cooperation, Freie Universität Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin have jointly offered the programme since 1998. The curriculum is geared towards students interested in developing EU-related expertise for subsequent employment in public administration, non-governmental organisations or business. On-the-job experience and networking are integral elements of the programme. Located at the Campus Lankwitz of Freie Universität Berlin, the programme offers students an ideal working environment.

Detailed Programme Description and Course Contents

The MA European Studies programme takes an interdisciplinary approach and aims to prepare highly qualified graduates for positions in work environments related to Europe, both at national and international levels. To this end, teaching is comprised of legal, economic, political, historical, and cultural sciences. The teaching staff consists of leading scholars in law, economics and social sciences from Berlin’s three renowned universities (Freie Universität, Technische Universität, and HumboldtUniversität), selected academics from other German and international universities, as well as experts from Think Tanks and the professional field. Due the small class sizes and exclusive teaching environment, the courses offer an intense exchange both with the teaching staff and the fellow students. Students will complete a two-month internship in a governmental institution or private business related to the programme’s focus on the EU. In addition, the programme includes a oneweek field trip to the major EU institutions in Brussels and Luxembourg. Finally, the programme promotes soft and organisational skills through outside events and in a supervised independent student project. Students are selected in a competitive process judged on their previous academic performance and practical work experience (either as full-time professional or in relevant internships). The programme is principally open to students with BA degrees from all disciplines. Teaching will be conducted in English. German language skills are advised.
