Why Study Philosophy?

Philosophy is the study and exploration of fundamental questions concerning life, the nature of the universe, the mind, and morality. Many of today's academic disciplines were once subjects in academic philosophy before becoming separate studies of their own. For example, much of modern science, such as chemistry and physics, had its roots in what was once called "natural philosophy."

Philosophy explores questions such as "What is the meaning of existence?" and "Is there a God?" As such, philosophy has historically had a profound influence on science and religion. In some cases, philosophy and religion are inseparable, such as with Taoism.

From Zoroastrianism to Buddhism and Ubuntu, philosophy is a practice carried out naturally by humans worldwide because we are curious and inquisitive beings.

In academics, the most prominent subjects that are studied in philosophy usually consist of philosophers from Europe. Some of the most famous names in philosophy include Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Nietzsche, and Simone de Beauvoir.

Degree Opportunities in Philosophy

Philosophy programs are offering BA, MA, and PhD degrees in universities around the world. After pursuing a philosophy degree, some students build their careers in academia and continue as postdoctoral researchers or get a professorship. Others pursue further education in subjects such as law, psychology, and political science.

The range of subjects in philosophy is broad. To benefit the most from scholarships, summer schools, and conferences in philosophy, it is a good idea to focus on the opportunities that relate most specifically to the topics that interest you.
