The Department of Law, Business and Economics at the University of Bayreuth (Prof. Erik Hornung) invites applications for one

Postdoctoral Position (payscale TV-L E13 or BayBesG A 13, 100%) or Doctoral Position (payscale TV-L E13, 75%) in economic history, long-run growth and development, and related fields.

The new Chair for Empirical Economic History within the department of Law, Business and Economics offers an interesting opportunity for research in quantitative economic history and long-run development. The new MA program ‘History and Economics’ will provide an attractive and intellectually stimulating environment. Requirements for Postdoctoral Research Position

  • PhD in economics, history or other relevant discipline (or close to completion)
  • Familiarity with econometric analysis and quantitative research methods
  • Excellent knowledge of STATA, ARC-GIS, R, or similar
  • Publishing record or evidence of potential to publish in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Requirements for PhD Position:

  • Excellent Master degree in economics, history or other relevant discipline
  • Good knowledge of STATA or similar
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Teaching requirements are 5 hours (Postdoc) or 4 hours (PhD) per week for seven months a year. The language of teaching will be English; German language skills are not required.

The duration of the appointment is limited under the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contracts (in German: Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) to facilitate scientific qualification and is subject to legal and personal requirements. Doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to obtain a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and participate in the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (BGPE). Postdoctoral researchers will have the opportunity for Habilitation. The appointment begins on July 1, 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter.
