Carlo Scarpa is a unique figure among the modern architects of the 20th century. Born and raised in Venice and the Veneto region, Scarpa transformed the ancient city and sites in the wider area by weaving the most modern of spatial conceptions into their material fabric. In his architecture and curatorial work, he joined different worlds, revised lost crafts, paying particular attention to place, time, ritual, detail, and water, including the experience of the user to a degree rarely found elsewhere in modern architecture. At the same time, he introduced entirely new structures, construction, and materials in sensitive historic contexts. Our contemporary challenges related to climate change, globalization, tourism and migration, and the sustainability of our historic urban environments can greatly benefit from Scarpa's radical thinking and imaginative interventions.
