This summer course introduces the principles and scope of global health and health-related strategies important for an understanding of health and disease in a global context. Topics discussed in this interdisciplinary course range from global health governance and policy, to the role of health systems, ethics and advocacy for research and development, to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, globalization and climate change on health outcomes.
What is global health? Which global health challenges do we face? What are key principles of global health? Who are the major actors in global health and how do they influence global health policy? What are the Sustainable Development Goals and how can they advance addressing major health challenges globally? What is the role of health systems, international partnership, ethical aspects, equity, technological innovation and advocacy for research and development? And what is the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, migration, globalisation and climate change on health outcomes?
These are some of the questions and topics that will be interdisciplinary addressed in interactive sessions and small group work by international faculty and participants.

Target group
Master’s level students, PhD researchers and professionals in medicine/global health/public health/biomedical sciences/social sciences or related disciplines with knowledge in epidemiology and public health and interest in global health.

Course aim
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • discuss the key principles of global health, governance and policy;
  • discuss the role of the sustainable development goals to address major global health challenges;
  • describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, globalisation and climate change on health outcomes;
  • and comprehend the role of international partnership, ethical aspects, technological innovation and advocacy for research and development on global health.

Fee info
EUR 750: Course + course materials
For students the course fee is € 500.
Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) as classified by the World Bank: Participants can apply for the LMIC-fee based on the location of the institution they are affiliated to. Limited discounted places available.
For multiple enrolment in courses recommended, a 30 Euro discount on the fee applies per course.
