The newly created Research Network on Women, Peace and Security (RN-WPS) is extending a two-year post-doctoral opportunity under the supervision of Prof. Erin Baines at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA), University of British Columbia (UBC) and Prof Megan MacKenzie at the School of International Studies at Simon Fraser University (SFU). The administrative home of the post-doctoral fellow is SPPGA, and the candidate will have a Visiting Fellow position at SFU.
RN-WPS is established within the framework of the Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) Collaborative Networks programme of the Department of National Defence. The aim of the Network is to mobilise Canadian-based expertise on issues related to the WPS agenda, and more broadly, to the intersections of militarism, (in)security, settler-colonialism, gender, race, sexuality and disability. In particular, it will facilitate knowledge exchange among researchers working in Canadian institutions, support and initiate innovative and multidisciplinary research, and diffuse research results to an academic, policy-making and general public audience.
The RN-WPS focuses on three strategic challenges identified by MINDS, and topics may include:
- Canada’s Defence Relations, conflict prevention and the implementation of WPS.
- Anticipate Future Challenges and shock events such as pandemics, and their gendered effects.
- Climate Change as a growing, multidimensional and gender-differentiated threat to national resilience.
- The Evolving Role of Major Powers and the nature of populist, anti-feminist and anti- LGBTQ+ international coalitions.
The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to be in residence at UBC throughout the academic year and to maintain an active research and publication agenda and to participate in the intellectual environment at UBC and SFU. There are no teaching requirements associated with this position; however, there is an expectation for the candidate to spend 20% of their time (approximately 1 day per week) working closely with the WPS-N in organizing and participating in events, and taking full part in WPS-RN Symposia, workshops, Summer Institutes, and the intellectual life of the Network.
To ensure full consideration, applicants should submit their applications to Dr Baines (erin.baines@ubc.ca) and attach the following in the order listed:
- A letter of application, inclusive of a research plan and how the fellowship intersects with one of the thematic areas of research;
- Curriculum vitae that includes the names and contacts of three referees;
Candidates must have a PhD or must have been awarded or submitted (oral defense pending) by the start date and within the past 5 years unless there were career interruptions. Applications from Canadian and non-Canadian citizens are welcome; however, the funding for this role is set and does not include visa or moving costs for the candidate. Knowledge of French is an advantage but not required.
