U.S. Foreign Policy 2021 Summer Fellowship Program

The Charles Koch Foundation is pleased to announce a call for applications for its 2021 summer fellowship.

This program will provide financial support for post-docs and untenured faculty members interested in completing or continuing an academic research project focused on U.S. foreign policy, U.S. grand strategy, and America’s role in the world. Preference will be given to applicants whose work is connected to the research questions related to these major themes:

  • U.S. grand strategy, particularly the costs, benefits, and consequences of various grand strategies and how they are adopted and implemented;
  • The future of U.S.-China relations, especially how to productively manage the relationship in a way that protects U.S. national interests while avoiding unnecessary conflict;
  • The future of American alliances, including re-evaluating existing commitments (such as NATO) and the overall costs, benefits, and consequences of alliances; and
  • Ending endless wars.

The 2021 summer fellowship is open to candidates from the fields of political science, international relations, security studies, economics, sociology, history, and public policy who have completed their Ph.D. and are working in an academic job. Preference will be given to applicants from the fields of political science, international relations, and security studies.

Fellows will be asked to participate in several online events with the other fellows: an introductory event to meet each other and describe your research projects; a mid-summer check-in for brainstorming and feedback; and an end-of-summer presentation of your progress-to-date on your project.

Funding levels are commensurate with the requirements of the research and the host institution. Grants will be awarded of up to $15,000. Graduate students without a Ph.D. are not eligible for this program, but may apply for a standard dissertation grant of $5,000 via the same form with the same application requirements.

Initial applications are due by midnight EST on Friday, April 30, 2021, and should be submitted through our online application form. Please select “RFP: Foreign Policy Summer Fellowship” for your application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they arrive.
