Heckman Stipends

Heckman Stipends, made possible by the A.A. Heckman Endowed Fund, are awarded semi-annually. Up to 10 stipends in amounts up to $2,000 are available each year. Funds may be applied toward travel to and from Collegeville, housing and meals at Saint John’s University, and costs related to duplication of HMML’s microfilm or digital resources (up to $250). The Stipend may be supplemented by other sources of funding but may not be held simultaneously with another HMML Stipend or Fellowship. Holders of the Stipend must wait at least two years before applying again.

The program is intended to help scholars who have not yet established themselves professionally and whose research cannot progress satisfactorily without consulting materials to be found in HMML’s collections.

Applications:

Applications must be submitted by March 15 for residencies between July and December of the same year or October 15 for residencies between January and June of the following year.

Applicants are asked to provide:

  • a letter of application with current contact information, the title of the project, length of the proposed residency at HMML and its projected dates, and the amount requested (up to $2,000)
  • a description of the project to be pursued, with an explanation of how HMML’s resources are essential to its successful completion of the project; applicants are advised to be as specific as possible about which resources will be needed (maximum length: 1,000 words). Use the vHMML Reading Room and contact the curator in charge of your subject area to shape your project proposal. Though priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate the necessity for accessing microfilm and uncataloged digital materials that are exclusively available on site, all applications are welcome.
  • an updated curriculum vitae
  • a confidential letter of recommendation to be sent directly to HMML by an advisor, thesis director, mentor, or, in the case of postdoctoral candidates, a colleague who is a good judge of the applicant’s work

Nicky B. Carpenter Fellowship in Manuscript Studies

These Fellowships in Manuscript Studies were established in 2012 by the late Nicky B. Carpenter of Wayzata, Minnesota, a Lifetime Member and former chair of the HMML Board of Overseers.

The Fellowship supports residencies at HMML for research by senior scholars using the digital or microfilm manuscript collections at HMML. (Graduate students and recent postdoctoral scholars should apply for the Heckman Stipends or the Swenson Family Fellowship for Eastern Christian Manuscript Studies).

Two to three fellowships of $5,000 will be awarded each year in support of a residency of at least two weeks. Funds may be applied toward travel to and from Collegeville, housing and meals at Saint John’s University, and costs related to duplication of HMML’s microfilm or digital resources (up to $500). Fellowships may be supplemented by other sources of funding but may not be held simultaneously with another HMML award. Holders of the Fellowship must wait at least two years before applying again.

Applications:

Applications must be submitted by March 15 for residency between July 1- December 31, or by October 15 for residency between January 1-June 30.

Applicants are asked to provide:

  • a letter of application with current contact information, the title of the project, length of the proposed residency at HMML and its projected dates

Though priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate the necessity for accessing microfilm and uncataloged digital materials that are exclusively available on site, all applications are welcome.
  • an updated curriculum vitae
  • a confidential letter of recommendation to be sent directly to HMML by a scholar with knowledge of both the applicant and the subject area of the project

Swenson Family Fellowships in Eastern Christian Manuscript Studies for Junior Scholars

The Swenson Family Fellowship in Eastern Christian Manuscript Studies, established in 2012, will be awarded semi-annually. The Fellowship was established by Dr. Gregory T. and Jeannette Swenson, with their son Nicholas Swenson.

The purpose of the Fellowship is to support residencies at HMML for graduate students or postdoctoral scholars with demonstrated expertise in the languages and cultures of Eastern Christianity. Awardees must be undertaking research on some aspect of Eastern Christian studies requiring use of the digital or microfilm manuscript collections at HMML. The program is specifically designed to aid new scholars in establishing themselves through research focused on manuscripts available through HMML. Postdoctoral scholars are understood to be those who at the time of application are within three years of being awarded a doctoral degree.

Awards will range from $2,500 – $5,000, based on project proposal and length of residency (two to six weeks). Funds may be applied toward travel to and from Collegeville, housing and meals at Saint John’s University, and costs related to duplication of HMML’s microfilm or digital resources (up to $500). The Fellowship may be supplemented by other sources of funding but may not be held simultaneously with another HMML fellowship. Holders of the Fellowship must wait at least two years before applying again. At its discretion, HMML may choose to award more than one fellowship per cycle.
