The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation
The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA) is the main teaching programme of the Global Campus of Human Rights(GC).
Established in 1997 thanks to the vision of 10 pioneer universities, EMA is the oldest Master’s programme supported by the European Union. Over the years it has developed according to changing approaches to human rights and democratisation in Europe and in the world and to more integrated strategies in trans-European human rights education. Today EMA counts on the participation of 41 prestigious universities and human rights centres from all member states of the European Union.
EMA’s academic excellence in teaching, research and practical training is a testament to the spirit shared by professors, experts, students and staff: genuine dedication to the advancement of global values and human dignity through inter-university cooperation, interdisciplinarity and an action-oriented approach. In order to achieve these aims, the programme successfully combines two objectives: on the one hand, to provide a solid theoretical preparation and, on the other hand, to offer a good understanding of the operational requirements and challenges of practical work.
The growing number of EMA graduates (more than 1300 so far) and their prominent careers reflect the far-reaching impact of EMA: a source of inspiration and the creator of a community of competent specialists working in the field of human rights and democratisation at the local, regional, national, international level both in the governmental and non-governmental sectors as well as in academia.

The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA) is a one-year advanced master’s course aimed at preparing professionals to respond to the operational requirements of daily work in international organisations, field operations, governmental and non-governmental bodies, and academia.

The APMA program is taught across two campuses. All students will study first semester at the IHRP, Mahidol University (Thailand). Second semester students will study at one of the four partner universities in Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, or Nepal.

Arab Master’s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights arma
The Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights is a unique programme designed to meet the needs of students, professionals and experts who want to deepen their knowledge and develop their skills in the field of democratic governance and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa. It is part of the Global Campus of Regional masters in Human Rights and Democracy supported by the European Union.
EMA is open to EU and non-EU citizens.
The criteria used during the selection process are:
- academic ability and background
- experience
- language competence
- motivation
Academic requirements
Applicants are required to hold a university degree of a high standard in a field relevant to human rights, including disciplines in Law, Social Sciences and Humanities, and must have a minimum of 180 ECTS (Bachelor/General Degree).
Candidatures can be considered as long as the applicant has obtained a degree corresponding to:
- 180 ECTS credits (generally a 3-year course) or
- 240 ECTS credits (generally a 4-year course) or
- A combination of a degree of 180 ECTS and relevant proven additional experience or studies (such as 1-year MA or summer courses)
