Senior Fellowships
The Balsdon and Hugh Last Fellows are the Senior Scholars in residence and as such are encouraged to take an interest in the work of other award-holders at the BSR, particularly those in fields close to their own, and to contribute to one of the BSR’s current research pathways. Senior scholars also give a public lecture as part of their fellowship
Balsdon Fellowship
Research area: humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: established scholars normally in post in a UK university (see note below). Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens, or must have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2019 not less than four years of residence in the UK; or must hold a post in a Higher Education Institution in the UK
Duration: 3 months (late September-late December; January-March; April-June; July-late September)
Closing date: 16 January 2020
Hugh Last Fellowship
Research area: For research on classical antiquity (excluding archaeological fieldwork and work on Roman Britain)
Open to: established scholars normally in post in a UK university (see note below). Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens, or must have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2019 not less than four years of residence in the UK; or must hold a post in a Higher Education Institution in the UK
Duration: 3 months (late September-late December; January-March; April-June; July-late September)

Awards for Senior or Early Career Scholars
Paul Mellon Centre Rome Fellowship
The Paul Mellon Centre sponsors an annual 3-month Rome Fellowship
Research area: British-Italian art-historical topics of any period from the medieval era to the contemporary
Open to: scholars, researchers, curators, archivists and GLAM professionals from immediately post-doctoral to those internationally recognised in their field of expertise. Applicants must have been awarded their doctorate by the closing date for applications.
Duration: 3 months (late September-late December; January-March; April-June)
Research Grant: Independent scholars: £7,000. Full-time university employees: £3,000, plus £8,000 towards teaching replacement at the Fellow’s home institution

Awards for Early Career Scholars
Rome Fellowships
Research area: humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants for Fellowships normally must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the closing date for applications (so awarded no earlier than January 2017). Applicants must be British citizens or must have been awarded their doctorate by a UK university (see note below)
Duration: 9 months
Research Grant: £550 per month.

Rome Scholarships
Research area: humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants who intend to submit their doctorate no later than 31 August 2020 but will be awaiting their viva and award of their degree. Applicants must be British citizens or must be completing their doctorate at a UK university (see note below)
Duration: 9 months
Research Grant: £500 per month
Closing date: 16 January 2020
Rome Awards
Research area: humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants should meet the eligibility criteria for either a Rome Fellowship or a Rome Scholarship
Duration: for an extended period of study in Italy, normally 3 months
Research Grant : £450 per month
Closing date: 16 January 2020
Rome Awards (donor-funded)
Research area: humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants normally will have begun a programme of research in the general field for which the Award is being sought, whether or not registered for a higher degree. Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens; or must be studying or have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK (see note below), having completed by October 2019 not less than four years of residence in the UK
Duration: 3 months
Research Grant : £450 per month
Closing date: 16 January 2020
Applications for Rome Fellowships, Rome Scholarships and Rome Awards are considered in a single competition. Separate applications are not required. Preference may be given to those who have completed their doctorate.

Selection criteria for the Balsdon and Hugh Last Fellowships
In making an appointment to an award the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters will assess all applications using the following set of criteria:
- The academic merit of the applicant judged by his/her previous record and references, including her/his prospects of making a future contribution to scholarship.
- The suitability of the project for the BSR, bearing in mind its location, resources and access to resources.
- The inherent academic significance and interest of the project proposed, and the feasibility of completion to the timetable stated.
- The relationship of the project to the BSR’s current research pathways.
- The suitability of the candidate to contribute to the academic community of the BSR and the need to ensure a reasonable balance between different disciplines and chronological periods within the BSR’s academic community.
- The role of the Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards in promoting Italian studies in Britain and the Commonwealth.
Selection criteria for Rome Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards
In making an appointment to an award the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters will assess all applications using the following set of criteria:

- The role of the Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards in promoting Italian studies in Britain and the Commonwealth.
General conditions (see also conditions for each opportunity)
- All applicants must have a first degree at the time of application.
- Applications must be submitted on the appropriate application form.
- Residencies will be tenable in the academic year (late September – June) 2019-20.
- The BSR is committed to offering opportunities to the widest possible range of projects and people. Normally two successive awards for the same project will not be considered.
- Fellows, Scholars and Award-holders are expected to abide by the BSR’s Research Ethics Policy and Code of Practice.
- Fellows, Scholars and Award-holders are required to live at the BSR.
- Partners may be accommodated for strictly limited periods by prior agreement but must pay for their board and lodging at the BSR’s prevailing rates. Children cannot be accommodated.
- Successful applicants are required to take out medical insurance for the duration of their tenure.
- Fellows, Scholars and Awardees are required to submit a report on their research within two months of the end of their award, and are requested to keep BSR informed of future progress. Rome Fellows and Scholars must also prepare a report during their residency.
- Fellows, Scholars and Awardees are expected to give Papers of the British School at Rome first refusal on any papers arising from the research undertaken at the BSR.
- Fellows, Scholars and Awardees are asked to donate a copy of any publications arising from their research whilst holding a BSR award to the BSR’s Library.
The Faculty’s decisions are final. Feedback cannot be given on unsuccessful applications.
The BSR reserves the right to alter any aspect of the Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards.
