The Institute of Social and Economic Research, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, of Memorial University of Newfoundland was established in 1961 to foster and undertake research into the many social and economic questions arising from the particular historic, geographic, and economic circumstances of Newfoundland and Labrador.While maintaining its focus on Newfoundland and Labrador, ISER supports comparative research. It encourages interdisciplinary as well as discipline-based research, and basic research as well as work with more immediate application.ISER's studies and research projects are pursued through a system of fellowships and research grants for approved projects. ISER also has grants available to support conferences that fall within its mandate.

ISER Doctoral and Masters Fellowships

Doctoral Fellowships are available, on a competitive basis, to candidates who are enrolled in a full-time doctoral programme at Memorial University. Fellowships are awarded specifically for the carrying out of the candidate’s doctoral research. Candidates must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree, other than the thesis. Candidates are eligible to apply until the completion of their 5th year. Fellowships in the amount of $17,700 per annum are normally awarded for up to one year (paid on a bi-weekly basis in Canadian dollars and pro-rated over the duration of the fellowship).

Master Fellowships are available, on a competitive basis, to Memorial University students enrolled in a Master programme. A Master Fellowship in the amount of $10,000 per annum is granted for one year in the student’s second year of the Master programme.

  1. Before attempting to fill in these pdfs download and save them on your computer - do not attempt to fill them in using your browser.

  3. Once the form has been filled in, click on the digital signature box at the end of the form (the box with the little red tag on it) and then either create a new digital signature if you have not digitally signed a pdf before, or use an existing digital signature to sign the pdf. NOTE: Do not sign the pdf until the form is completed and ready for emailing; signing the pdf and then changing the fields will invalidate the document.

  4. Then forward the pdf to the emaill address indicated on the pdf.

To apply for a doctoral fellowship:

  • Fill in and digitally sign the Doctoral Fellowship Application. 

  • Fill in the Applicant section on the Letter of Appraisal form and then email it to the referee so they can fill in their section. You should fill in and email one copy of the form for each referee you are using as a reference.

To apply for a masters fellowship:

  • Fill in and digitally sign the Masters Fellowship Application. 

  • Fill in the Applicant section on the Letter of Appraisal form and then email it to the referee so they can fill in their section. You should fill in and email one copy of the form for each referee you are using as a reference.

Doctoral Fellowships are available on a competitive basis to candidates who are enrolled in a full-time doctoral programme at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Fellowships are awarded specifically for the carrying out of the candidate’s doctoral research on a topic which falls under the mandate of the Institute.

Candidates must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree, other than the dissertation. Doctoral Fellowships are awarded for one year.  An ISER Doctoral fellowship may not be held concurrently with any other Doctoral Fellowship.All proposals for ISER Doctoral Fellowships must first be approved by the candidate’s Head of Department or Graduate Coordinator.

Master Fellowships are available on a competitive basis to students at Memorial University of Newfoundland who are enrolled in a Master programme and involved in a research project which falls under the Institute’s mandate. Candidates must have completed two semesters of full-time course work or the equivalent.

Master Fellowships are awarded for up to one year.
