Description

Duration is three years (01/11/2018 - 31/10/2021). The course venue is at Modena. The PhD Course offers the following three curricula: Computer engineering and science; Electronics and telecommunications; Industrial Applications of ICT.

Research topics

The research topics included in the available curricula encompass most of the modern technologies in the fields of information management, electronics and telecommunications.

The Computer Engineering and Science Curriculum concerns different research areas of computer science and computer engineering, involving both foundational theory (e.g., software principles and software engineering, electronic computers, operating systems, computer networks, databases and information systems), and advanced theories and emerging applications (e.g., business intelligence, the internet of things, sensor networks, computer vision and multimedia, adaptive software systems, the future internet, web security, techniques for management and analysis of Big Data, machine learning, digital technologies for Industry 4.0).

The Electronics and Telecommunications curriculum concerns various research areas of electronics and electronic measurements, telecommunications, electrical circuits, electromagnetics and automatic engineering.

The Curriculum in Industrial Applications of ICT concerns the development of new knowledge aimed at satisfying the needs of job market and, consequently, whose relevance is not exclusively limited to the academic world.

All the curricula will deal with topics concerning Industry 4.0 and Big Data.

Training goals

The offered courses and research activities allow PhD students to acquire various skills useful to develop innovation in the field of Information and Communication Technologies and top get qualified positions undertaking in universities, public or private research institutions, and private companies. A group of internationally recognized Italian and foreign professors manages the doctoral program.

Professional perspectives

The PhD Course in ICT promotes both basic research and applied research/technology transfer, in cooperation with industrial partners. PhD activities concern both theoretical and applied research; for this reason PhD theses include both innovative applications and novel theoretical results. The involvement of industrial partners favors the technological transfer of research results, while the university guarantees the innovativity and soundness of scientific research. The importance of collaboration in the industrial field is evidenced by the research contracts signed by various companies supporting the doctoral activities.

In the past, the Doctoral Program in ICT has been the best source of recruitment for university research staff in this field. The excellent level of training is witnessed by the number and quality of scientific publications as well as by research contracts and collaborations to which PhDs have contributed. Doctors who have chosen to pursue their professional career have been recruited by industrial research companies and laboratories, operating mainly in the ICT sector. In this case doctoral candidates have been offered qualifying positions, recognizing the doctoral years as past seniority. Lastly, it is important to mention that IT and telecommunications offer various opportunities in the advanced tertiary sector, while electronics and automation are of greatest interest in manufacturing and biomedical districts.

The research topics offered for this PhD program are available on the website of the PhD Course www.ict.unimore.it at: http://www.ict.unimore.it/index.php/for-students/research-topics

At the same address the list of courses offered the previous PhD programs can be found; moreover, the training offer for this cycle is outlined (the final list will be made available during the year). PhD candidates can apply following the call instructions, available at http://www.unimore.it/didattica/doctorates.html  It is important to remember that an important part of the evaluation of the applications is related to the "statement of interest", in which each candidate can indicate his/her preference for the curriculum and the research topic among those proposed by the PhD course at http://www.ict.unimore.it/index.php/for-students/research-topics
