Post-Doctoral Fellowship Opportunity 2018, Canada
The Department of History in the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University invites qualified candidates to apply for a two-year appointment, Wilson Post-Doctoral Fellowship. It is planned to award two of these fellowships in 2018. This position is included within the Canadian Union of Public Employees (“CUPE”) Local 3906 Unit 3 representing Post-Doctoral Fellows.
Description of Role
The Wilson Institute has as its mission the rethinking of Canadian history within a transnational framework. This perspective involves studying the ways in which Canadians have contributed to and been influenced by transnational or supranational phenomena such as international migration, Diaspora politics, religious movements, changing conceptions of human rights, gender and civil society, popular culture, epidemics, wars, and global finance and trade, to take just a few examples.
Qualifications
Scholars interested in engaging with the mandate of the Institute are invited to apply. The fellowship is open to junior scholars who have received their PhD no earlier than 1 January 2015 or who are scheduled to receive their PhD by 1 June 2018. The two-year appointment to the Wilson Institute for Canadian History begins on 1 July 2018 and carries a stipend of $50,000 plus benefits and up to $5,000 for research or publication expenses.
The fellow will pursue her/his own research and publishing agenda, teach one oneterm course, and help develop and administer the research mission of the Institute. There is an expectation that post-doctoral scholars will participate in the events of the Institute on an ongoing, sometimes weekly, basis. It is normally the case that fellows are resident in Hamilton.
Application Procedure
Completed applications must include a cover letter, CV, a sample of scholarly writing, and two (2) letters of reference, including one from the dissertation advisor. The covering letter must clearly discuss the applicant’s research and publishing plans for the fellowship years, which can include preparing the dissertation for publication. Evidence of ways in which the applicant may engage the research mission of the Institute would be helpful. The covering letter should not exceed two (2) single-spaced pages.
