The 51st Essex Summer School

The 51st Essex Summer School takes place between 9 July and 17 August 2018. The Summer School consists of three two-week sessions. Each session offers a variety of postgraduate level courses. Courses usually run for two weeks, infrequent exceptions run for one week only. Courses cover various types of quantitative and qualitative research methods, research design, techniques for data collection and measurement as well as mathematics. The language of instruction is English.

Note that class numbers are strictly limited! The program therefore recommends early application — especially for courses in session 1 and 2, which tend to fill quickly. It is possible to attend a morning and an afternoon course per session, though it is recommended that applicants pay attention to the required homework.

The Summer School attempts to give places in courses to participants who command over the required skills. Applicants are advised to pay careful attention to the course requirements, which are clearly stated in the course descriptions. Participants can fresh-up their mathematics knowledge in an intensive course, Mathematics for Social Scientists. The course is free for participants of the Summer School. The course cannot be taken without participation in at least one other course. Most courses combine lectures, seminars, and lab sessions. Note that lab sessions depend on the content of the course.

The Summer School provides an opportunity for social scientists to make contact with professional social scientists from other countries. Besides classroom instruction and daily laboratory work, there are evening seminars on research topics of special interest.
