Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Senior Fellowship Program 2019, UK

Publish Date: Nov 26, 2018

Deadline: Jan 31, 2019

Application Deadline: 31 January 2019

This category of award is available to individual applicants only.

Senior Fellowships are offered annually to academics, established scholars or senior museum professionals in the field of British art and architectural history either to complete a manuscript or book for publication or to undertake a sustained period of research towards a major project. The fellowships are for senior scholars only and are for nine months each.

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule. The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Senior Fellowships are for the academic year 2019/2020 and may be taken between September 2019 and September 2020. Fellowships cannot be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

Scope of Senior Fellowships

Nine-month full-time Senior Fellowships are specifically designated for:

  • the completion of a book or other such major study for immediate publication (printed or online)
  • a period of sustained research for a clearly defined major project which will lead to a publication (printed or online), a catalogue or an exhibition

They offer funding to release Fellows from teaching and/or other employment responsibilities and provide them with an extended and defined period to devote to writing or research.

Eligibility

Senior Fellowships are designated for prominent and established scholars in the field of British art or architectural history. Senior Fellowships may not be taken for less than the nine-month period offered and they must be taken on a full-time basis. Applications for shorter periods will not be accepted.

Please note it is not permitted to submit a Research Support Grant application at the same time as a Senior Fellowship application.

Funding

Senior Fellowships of £40,000 each will be awarded.

Fellowship funds are offered either to the Fellow’s university or institution to cover replacement teaching or staff costs or as a grant to an independent or freelance scholar. An award paid to a university or an institution to cover teaching, curatorial or staff replacement costs must be used for that purpose only. The Centre does not pay full economic costs.

If an independent Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Senior Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award.

Application

You do not have to complete your application in one go, but will be able to return to your form and submit your application when you are satisfied with it.

Applications and nominated referee details must be received by 31 January, referees have until 10 February to submit their references.
