PhD Studentship in Lifelong Learning and Widening Participation
The University of Leicester Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning and School of Education are delighted to be able to offer a new three year PhD studentship. The scope of the studentship project has been partly established in advance and involves concerted work in the areas of widening participation and lifelong learning. The project is described in more detail here.
The studentship is for full-time study only and applicants need to commence study within the academic year 2015/16. It will cover tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate only). The successful candidate will also receive a Research Training Support Grant worth £750 each year, and be able to bid for conference funding within the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning.
The entry requirements for these studentships are identical to those for any other entrant on to the PhD programme, but the process requires a focused research proposal and an additional personal statement (see below).
How to Apply for the September 2015/16 Studentship
Studentship applications will be considered for September 2015/16 entry ONLY, and only for applicants who wish to study for a PhD full-time.
All applicants must follow the procedures as outlined in the University guidance.
- A 3000-4000 word research proposal, which elaborates a research proposal for a doctoral thesis that fits with the project outlined. It should contain a well-rounded outline of the relevant academic literature(s), the research questions it will try to answer and what contribution to knowledge these will make, the proposed methodology and methods of data collection and analysis it plans to use. The proposal must be fully referenced.
- A 500 word personal statement which addresses the following:
(a) why the scope of the studentship project is attractive to you in intellectual terms and how your educational or career background equips you to undertake an academic project of this type.
(b) why the studentship is essential to enable you to undertake a PhD and why other sources of funding are not available to you.
Applicants who do not supply either a research proposal or a personal statement that conform to the expectations outlined above, will not be considered for shortlisting.
The eventual award decision will be based on the following criteria: the quality of the proposed project and the extent to which it sits within the relevant outline project, the likelihood of the student completing within the maximum registration period, financial need, references, qualifications (including English language capability), academic background and performance at interview.
