University of Alberta Postdoctoral Fellowships

The University of Alberta offers two postdoctoral fellowships:

Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies established through a bequest from the late Dorothy J Killam
  • valued at $46,000 per year for two years
  • number of fellowships awarded varies each year (three for 2017 (funding years of 2018/2019))
  • includes a one-time $4,000 travel/research grant
  • covers the cost of the University Postdoc Supplemental Health Insurance Plan

Grant Notley Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • provided by donations from friends of Grant Notley, matched by the Province of Alberta
  • valued at $46,000 per year for two years
  • available for research in politics, history, economy or society of Western Canada or related fields
  • one fellowship awarded each year
  • includes a one-time $4,000 travel/research grant
  • covers the cost of the University Postdoc Supplemental Health Insurance Plan

Individual departments are responsible for pre-screening all documents before submitting fellowship applications. Departments then submit a maximum of one nomination ELECTRONICALLY for each fellowship (ie. one Killam nominee and one Notley nominee) to the Postdoctoral Fellows Office.

Please make sure each nomination meets the eligibility requirements -- no exceptions will be made.

Deadline for submission to Postdoctoral Fellows Office is January 10, 2018. Departments are also responsible for notifying applicants who are not being nominated.

Awards will be announced in May 2018

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Open to citizens of any country
  • Must have completed a doctoral degree (within 2 years post-doctorate from the time of application submission to desired department (on or after December 02, 2015) or will do so prior to commencing fellowship
  • The doctoral degree obtained must be from a university other than the University of Alberta
  • At the time of application submission to desired department, must not hold a postdoc position at the University of Alberta or be employed at the University of Alberta. Please note that any applicant that begins a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Alberta or is employed by the University of Alberta after time of submission and before final selection will be adjudicated in a second tier. 
NOTE :
  • Fellowships may be awarded in departments without doctoral programs, but only where facilities are adequate and doctoral calibre research is being carried out
  • Killam/Notley Fellowship holders should be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to achieve distinction in their profession, should not be a one-sided person, and each scholar's special distinction should be founded upon sound character and collegiality.
  • Fellowships are only tenable at the University of Alberta
