Each scholarship is fully-funded, including fees and an annual stipend of €20,000 for four years. Students will gain invaluable research and teaching experience, preparing them to take their place as academic leaders of the future.

Grattan Scholars are chosen not only for their scholarly achievements, but also for their commitment to teaching and ambition to understand and improve society through their research and education. Grattan Scholars are required to engage in teaching-related activities to a maximum of six hours per week during the teaching term.

Application Process

In 2017/2018 three PhD scholarships are to be awarded to outstanding students in the disciplines of Economics and Political Science. Please note that students must be accepted onto the relevant PhD register in order to be considered for a Grattan Scholarship.

Additional details regarding research strengths, admissions requirements and the applications process are available on the departmental websites:

Economics - Two Grattan Scholarships will be available in Economics in 2017/2018. The PhD in Economics is a competitive degree aiming to rank among the best flagship Economics programmes in Europe and produces the largest number of research degrees of any Economics department in Ireland. Importantly, it blends an innovative curricular part, which offers optional courses jointly with other departments in Ireland, with a unique research environment that promotes close interaction with the faculty. The closing date for applications for entry to the PhD register and consideration for a Grattan Scholarship is 1st April, 2017.

Political Science - One Grattan Scholarship will be available in Political Science in 2017/2018. The PhD in Political Science is an innovative programme, which involves course work in the first two years, and which combines an intensive training in the substance and methodology of research along with a traditional emphasis on conducting original research. Almost all graduates of this programme go on to take on positions in academia. The deadline for applications to the September intake is the 31st March, 2017.
