The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) is an independent human and minority rights organisation with a particular focus on Jewish, Roma and Hungarian communities and other ethnic or national, linguistic and religious minorities. As an international research, education and advocacy platform, TLI aims to bridge the gaps between research and policy, norms and practice.

TLI is currently looking for five research fellows for its project “Roma and Resistance during the Holocaust and in its Aftermath”. This is a joint project with ternYpe – International Roma Youth Network and La Voix des Rroms, financed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the Stiftung „Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft” (EVZ) and Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The project aims to fill the gap in academic research, awareness raising and remembrance activities in relation to Roma resistance during the Holocaust and its aftermath.

The fellows are expected to carry out research and prepare a paper in the broader issue areas presented below, which are intended as some major strands of a more general research agenda on the resistance of the Roma. The individual research designs are expected to focus on narrower issues in one of the listed research topics. Successful research designs should be specific and doable within the allocated time frame.

Job Specification

The research fellows are expected to:

  • Design, plan and carry out research focusing on one or several aspects of one of the research topics listed below;
  • Submit a 45-50-page paper (i.e. 20-25,000 words) summarising and analysing the research findings;
  • Submit a detailed progress report on a monthly basis;
  • Attend an expert workshop to present and discuss the research designs in May 2017,
  • and present the research findings at an international conference concluding the project in March 2018.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A completed Master’s degree, preferably a completed PhD in history, anthropology, sociology, political sciences, human rights or other relevant fields in humanities and social sciences;
  • Expertise in the study of the Holocaust, the genocide of the Roma, the resistance during the Holocaust, or any other related issue area; and a substantial research portfolio in an area that falls under one or more of the above research topics
  • Excellent academic English and knowledge of other languages relevant to the chosen field of research;
  • Strong research, analytical and writing skills;
  • Ability to design, plan and implement a research project.

  • A 1000-word research proposal on one of the listed research topics that presents briefly the analytical framework, research methods, principal sources, and a timeline;
  • An unedited sample of two academic pieces written in English (at least 3000 words);
  • The contact details of two references familiar with your educational or work background. Selected candidates will be notified in March.

Successful candidates will be awarded with a monthly scholarship of 650 EUR for a period of nine months.The research fellowship will start on 3 April 2017.
