Applicants must hold or be close to completing a postgraduate Masters degree in a relevant field. Overseas students are welcome to apply and would receive the same partial maintenance, but it’s possible they may need to pay the difference between UK/Europe and overseas fees (the difference is around GBP7100 per year). The holders will reside in Aberdeen during the studentship period, except for periods of research and conference travel.

The Centre for Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law (CISRUL) will offer one or more inter-disciplinary 3-year PhD studentships to start in September 2015. The studentships will include fees and partial maintenance. Founded in 2009, CISRUL aims to produce conversation across the social sciences and humanities on key concepts of the modern polity. Citizenship, civil society and rule of law are three such key concepts, all three of some pedigree but enjoying a new lease of life, prescribed by bodies such as IMF and United Nations, championed by social movements, and debated in the media and in academic research, although they are also interested in related notions such as democracy, human rights, multiculturalism and pluralism.

One or more inter-disciplinary PhD studentships are available.
These PhD studentships are awarded for up to 3 years.
The studentships will include fees and partial maintenance.

Criteria for selection will be:
-Quality of application,
-Closeness of fit to CISRUL’s ongoing debates and
-Closeness of fit to one or more of PhD supervisors.

Studentship applicants can apply either to a PhD programme in a discipline such as Anthropology, Politics, Sociology, History etc. or can apply to inter-disciplinary PhD in Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law. In either case you should state in your programme application that you are applying for our studentship (and/or another studentship). There is no separate studentship application.
