The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.
The Department of Software Technology comprises research groups working on core computer science and engineering topics. The department’s research mission is to perform excellent research at an internationally recognised level in the design, construction, and analysis of complex, concurrent, and cooperative computer and information systems. Inspiration for the research topics is derived largely from technical ICT problems in industry and society.
The Algorithmics group is a section in the ST Department. Algorithmics is a core area of computer science concerned with the design, analysis, and implementation of problem-solving methods that can be executed on computer systems. The research of the Algorithmics group focuses on novel algorithmic techniques in automated planning, where handling uncertainty, dealing with strategic behaviour in multi-actor settings, and flexibility metrics are particularly important aspects. We aim to apply these techniques in traffic and transportation, energy, and maintenance.
Automated decision-making is a key capability of any intelligent system. Smart systems (e.g., for traffic planning or energy systems) need to plan ahead, which is particularly challenging when uncertainty and many agents are involved. To target the need for new models and algorithms, we offer the following three PhD positions.
PhD position 1: combining machine learning and model checking to learn and evaluate models for sequential decision-making. Main supervisor: Dr. M.T.J. Spaan.
PhD position 2: developing algorithms for planning under uncertainty for optimising flexible energy use in industry. Main supervisor: Dr. M.T.J. Spaan.
PhD position 3: developing algorithms for strategic decision-making regarding longer-term investments and trading. Main supervisor: Dr. M.M. de Weerdt.
- Perform scientific research
- Implement and evaluate research prototypes
- Present results at international conferences
- Publish results in scientific journals
- Participate in activities of the research group.
We are looking for excellent candidates who meet the following requirements:
- MSc degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Operations Research, or a closely related field
- Affinity with interdisciplinary work
- Good programming skills
- Good speaking and writing skills in English.
